I have the EXACT same problem, with this ouput from Win95 as the crash cause. Needless to say, this is EXTREMELY annoying, even after going through all the suggested fixes in readme.txt and patching to 3.x:

PS: My system is an Intel P233MMX, Cirrus Logics 5434 2 meg video, Canopus Pure3D 3D vid, SoundBlaster 16, 48 megs RAM, 200 megs
free on C:\ and 1-1.1 gigs free on the game
drive, running Win95, running the 3.0 English patch on the fresh-from-store SMAC, all drivers being the current versions.

Send me the map that caused the game to crash. [email protected]. Also, are you having problems is the scenario editor John? Email me the details of your problem if not.

It seems my problem was two-fold. Nothing worked the first attempt at a fix, including the suggestions here and in readme.txt. On a lark, I uninstalled, reinstalled then patched to 3.0 and checked. It worked, but since SOUND.DLL was renamed to SOUND.DL_, there's no sound. It could have been an install problem that I thought resolved fine (CD-ROM drive not ready dialog), but probably missed installing one critical file. Now, the game works with SOUND.DLL renamed, but hopefully some sort of patch will fix the problem (current version of Soundblaster 16/DirectX 6 drivers), which is odd, since the SB16 is probably one of the most common sound cards, if not THE most common, these days and the game just isn't the same without sound. Thanks for the help.

I can't confirm a relation to sound as I have disabled all acustic features.

However, I've always problems with the editor, especially with keyboard and mouse and sometimes F10 the only is to get the control back.

I'll send the file

John D,

I have the exact same problem at the same address. I have reloaded the game clean three times (with & w/o patch 3). It still crashes at the beginning of year 2536. I'm in win-98 on a Dell XPS 400 PC w/128 Ram, STB nVidia Zx 8 MEG video card w/Direct X 6.1. Turtle Beach Montegro Sound card..I updated all my drivers this last weekend as well!

Jeffrey Morris FIRAXIS posted 04-13-99 10:29 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Jeffrey Morris FIRAXIS  Click Here to Email Jeffrey Morris FIRAXIS
Well, the Montegro may be being misdetected at EAX compatible, so I'd set the EAX and DS3D entries in the alpha centauri.ini file to 0 to see if that's the problem. You could also rename the sound.dll to sound.dl_ to see if sound is actually the problem at all.

I can't run the game at all. I've installed the game and upgraded to v3.0. When I try to run the game, I get the Firaxis Intro, a black screen, and then an "invalid page fault" in Terran.exe (It looks like the one already posted here) and then back to Windows.

I have upgraded to DirectX 6.1 (for some reason before it was 4.0) and all of my drivers but 2 SB16 drivers are certified. Everything tests okay.

My computer setup: Cyrix 686 P166+, 64MB ram, S3 Virge video, Canopus Pure 3D video, SBLive (brand new and really cool, BTW, especially with the 4 speaker sound).

Any thoughts? BTW, played the demo and it ran fine. Also, I added the direcdraw line to the ini file to keep the intro screen from changing resolutions and I added the video mode=800 to keep the resolution at 800x600. That's all I did. Did I mention that I ugraded to v3.0? I did and the game crashed even before the upgrade. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled. No movies were installed either time.

Please help! Please send a reply to e-mail and to the board. I don't know how often I can get to the board. Thx.

Same deal as above. Try disabling the sound.dll by renaming it, or setting the ini entries to 0 to ensure it's not the sound card. If not try setting your hardware acceleration to 0 for the graphics card. Right-click on my computer, select properties, then performance, then graphics. Set the slider to 0.

Just wanted to post an update to my previous message above. You'll be happy to note that my terran.exe crash was due to my really crappy CD-Rom drive. It's about the only piece of junk I have in my computer. I uninstalled and did a full reinstall and the only time it checks the CD now is upon starting. I didn't have to turn anything off or change anything. Thx. Great Game!!

Hitman: Not having any info on your machine, or version, I'd have to say that it sounds like you're running out of virtual memory. If you're using v3.0, playing on a large or huge map, and around 300 turns in, make sure you've got plenty of HD space on the c: drive (or wherever your swapfile is), it's defragged, and that windows is managing your swapfile.

I've noticed a number of people complaining about Terran.exe crashes and also about the amount of memory that SMAC seems to leak after playing for a long period of time.

I got Memturbo to correct the memory leak and as soon as I started running it,I began to get Terran.exe crashes.

Removing Memturbo got rid of my crashes. I also went in msconfig(under Win98) and removed several apps that were running at startup. Now I can play for 6-7 hours at a time and I don't notice any crashes or slowdowns

I'm playing a random standard size map. Each faction had its own continent. It's now 2307, and crashes while doing the other factions--I'm playing the PKs.
This is my first game with the patch and it worked fine until now.
Terran.exe fault at...yada yada yada.

I have Win95, 64 MB ram (32 MB free when loading SMAC) and set the swap file to 128 MB *fix* and defragmented, SMAC installation "complete" and calling SMAC with empty CD Rom.
I had maps up to 128 x 198 (more than huge), but never had a problem in relation to memory.
The only problem I ever had (but always) is with the editor and keyboard / mouse, independent from map size or swap file.

My game is also crashing in terran.exe
I have downloaded the lastest drivers for my gateway system, directx 6.1 and renamed sound.dll and terran still crashes.

Peter: Does the crash still occur if you let windows manage your swapfile? Quite honestly, the game may require more than 128 megs on huge maps. Just as a test, I'd recommend having LOADS of free HD space on the drive that the swapfile resides on and let windows manage it's size.

Mitch: Where does it crash? Run DXDiag.exe and see what it thinks of your video and sound drivers. What are the specs of your system?
