Hi, I'm a newbie who just downloaded the 3.0 patch after playing SMAC for a couple weeks (and loving it - keep up the good work Firaxis!). Anyway, something seems to have happened to the sound - the explosions have went away All the other sound seems fine, even the laser sounds during a battle, but at the end of the battle, no mind-worm splat or unit explosion (the visuals are fine). Sometimes the explosion sound is there but its very very faint.

My original game was fine, and I've tried uninstalling and re-installing both the game and the V3 patch, but same result (sound was fine after reinstall until V3 patch was reinstalled). FYI, my configuration is PIII 450 w/integrated sound (SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64D), 64MB 100MHz SDRAM, 9GB.

Let me know if you can help. Many thanks!

I've had no other problems so far, but then again I haven't been using V3 for long. Otherwise the game is great (if someone asks me what I did in March, I'd say, "played SMAC and eat, with a little sleep"!).

One last thing, I'm a home PC and PC Game newbie (witness the new hardware), so be gentle on the computer explanations.

Best regards, Ed

Since I posted this note early today, I'm losing more and more of the sound after the V3 patch, not just the battle sounds but also the background music etc. Vocals are still fine, but seems like the problem is escalating. It was a nuisance before and now its becoming a major pain.

Help appreciated! Thanks, Ed

It could very well be the soundcard is being detected as EAX compatible. Set both the EAX and DS3D entries in the alpha centauri.ini file to 0.

Just a silly question I'm sure was answered somewhere else, or I already know in the dusty part of my brain...What the heck is EAX? =]

It's Creative Labs 3D sound standard. Two others are A3D which card's like the Diamond MX300 support, and DS3D with is microsofts. It allows real-time effects to be played, like reverb, and better positional placement of sounds.

Thanks Jeffrey for the quick response. Your suggestion seems to have taken care of the problem, at least the explosions are back, now there's no need to put a random Bruce Willis move in the VCR to sub for SMAC's battle explosions. Anyway, thanks again and keep up the good work. Regards, Ed

Oh yeah...Yeah...I knew that.. :P ..I just uhmm..Forgot, yeah that's it..Heh..I hate Using the 3D setting on my sound card... Seems to corrupt most of the sounds in general computer use and make things sound too bassy, without enough treble..
