SMAC had been performing nearly flawlessly on my machine (occasional mouse button freeze-ups and pre v.3.0 sound issues) until I "cleaned up" my disk using the Cybermedia utility from Win98 plus! There were about a dozen or so temp files that were flagged as "safe" to delete...so I did. Big mistake. Now the game crashes when I try to start it. It gives me the following error message: TERRAN caused an invalid page fault in module TERRAN.EXE at 015f:00626603. Registers: EAX=0000c000 CS=015f EIP=0062603 EFLGS=00010212 EBX=00000000 SS=0167 ESP=00bfe48 EBP=00bfe50 ECX=00003000 DS=0167 ESI=00000000 FS=2a3f EDX=00000000 ES=0167 EDI=007757dc GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: f3 a5 ff 24 95 18 67 62 00 8b c7 ba 03 00 00 00 Stack dump: 0000000d 006dd9fc 00bffd64 00422bfc 007757dc 00000000 0000c000 00000400 bff54929 00000000 04000000 04000080 04008000 04008080 04800000 04800080 Since it is now 1:15am, I'm going to get some sleep and re-install tomorrow (well...later today) but I thought that this might help your trouble-shooting efforts. Seems to me that others might have done the same thing in their zeal to keep their HD's "clean." I'll post tomorrow p.m. with my results.

Well, it just gets curiouser and curiouser. I saved some of the games onto floppies, uninstalled, installed fresh (full install), applied patch v3.0, reinstalled saved games from floppies. Everything works fine now. What I want to know now is:1) Why do the folders appear on my load menu e.g. movies, facs, maps, progs? They were doing this before also (after I patched w/ v3.0) 2) Why are the temporary folders that previously appeared in the Cybermedia non-critical file clean-up routine nowhere to be found? Not that I wanted to fart around with them again. But, I still would like to know why deleting supposedly temporary files would kill my program. By the way, I really love the game, and it has performed with very few hiccups on my system. K6-2/300, 64mb, 4mb nVidia, Yamaha sound card, Win98, made by EZC and purchased in June 98 for more than I care to admit! Any responses to my queries would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Yeh, I always wanted to have something, anything, all to myself (I'm married), just didn't realize it would end up being a thread in a troubleshooting forum! Now, what does that say about the quality of my life? I've figured out WHEN I am introducing the file folders into the load save screens. I just don't understand why, though.I've been transfering saved games from the computer at work to the one at home via floppies. I did not have the folders show up until I did that. I confirmed that this morning when checking the work machine the load screen showed only the games started and saved here at work. After knocking off a few years of play I went to save and, sure enough, there were all them darned folders taking up space on my save/load screens. What gives? Anybody got an explanation? I'm getting lonely. transfering a |

Jeff, Thanks for responding. As to losing track of what I saying, don't worry, it happens to most people I communicate with. I run off on more tangents than a french curve! As a matter of fact, I am still curious as to why since transfering .sav files from the work computer to the home computer (and vice-versa) my v3.0 game has taken to saving games directly into the main folder (SMAC) as opposed to storing them in the saves folder. I also now have the sub-folders e.g. facs, fx, maps, movies, et cetera show up on the load game screen as well as the save game screen. Is that intended? Why didn't they show up until I started doing floppy transfers of the .sav files? What is the purpose of them showing up where they are? Any clues would pacify my curiousity. Again, thanks! P.S. If you get a chance, can you look at my post regarding base governors? |

I haven't seen the folders on the main screen? The game stores the last folder you saved into as the default folder. So, my guess, is that by saving into the root of the a:\ drive, it's saving to the root of the game's folder. I'd just save them into the saves folder, and copy them out.jkm firaxis games |
