I wanted to play SMAC on a machine that has no CD drive. Installation went ok, but when I clicked 'finish', I got a 'No CD-ROM found!' message box instead! Is there any way to make the game use the network drive?

There is a dinky little utiltiy called fakecd which might solve your problem. Makes a drive/subdirectory look like a CDROM drive.
