One day I decided to try playing against a human player over the Internet. I went to AlphaHQ.net and clicked on the short lobby. The computer indicated that it was loading into my system. I waited for at least half-an-hour and the thing still wouldn't load.
I'm playing at home so I know I am probably not behind a firewall. However, my ISP may have a firewall but I don't know why. Has anyone else had this problem and how do you fix it?

AlphaHQ.net is in testing and not currently the best way to play internet games. I'd just use something like ICQ to exchange IP numbers or play with some regulars you play with. Trust me, playing complete strangers a game of SMAC (which can literally take days), is a recipe for disaster.

We've hooked up several times for internet games, and it has worked very well! Until AlphaHQ is ready, try locating players in some of the game newsgroups, and share IPs.

How long do the games usually take?
And after you get someone's IP address how do you proceed from there?

We played a 3 player game over a lan. It took a total of 20 hours over three days. Once you have the ip address of someone hosting, connect to the internet, select MP, then TCP/IP, then setup your name. Then enter the ip address and you're ready to join.
