System in a nut: 200MMX 4 gig/200 swap/200 free STB Velocity 4400 TNT - certified Monster 3dfx (mm3dfx.drv not certified (?)) I/O Magic PCI soundcard (cheap but does have A3D) and the other usual bells & whistles. Cable Modem (hurrah) PROBLEM: After repeated hours with SMAC, it begins to bog down to a crawl, and video redraw is not performed correctly. It "ghosts" animations. A full reboot is the best option. I leave movies off, as well as music (which I had hoped would be the problem), so it's not that. I havent had the game long enough to pursue other strategies (i do have ver 2.0 by the way). In fact a possible related incident occured when i installed the patch, it seemed to then quit sounds occassionaly ,which never happened in the short while I played as ver 1.0)...in fact never got far enough as ver 1.0 to see the unit anim meltdown. Other than that, I've tried the readme tweaks, except for the sound.dl_ fix, which isn't a very practical fix, if game is without sound, it is unplayable in my view. I am trying the directdraw=0 ini trick, will let you know if that, in particular, fixes the problem... concerned that it will not look as good, or play as smooth, though. Will let you know. ---------- In an unrelated issue: how about some serious consideration for an option to "weaken" the Probe units somehow, they are a real pain and seem unrealistic, (against the AI.) This is the only negative I would give (besides the usual squabble of more, more, more) in an otherwise delightful game (sim?) Oh, the Air Units AI is not too bright either, and The Formers could use a tweak. Well, thats my two cents, and your welcome to it. May the Planet Nurture You. ShadowZen
