I was so happy when I managed to reserve the last copy of SMAC at the local Software Etc. I made a special detour on the way home from work to pick it up, rushed home, popped the CD in the drive, and NADDA! Completely unreadable. At first I thought great, my drive died, but then in rapid succession I popped in 6 other game CD's and everyone of them fired right up. I called 7 other stores tonight and the only place that still has a copy is 25 miles away. Granted I am going to drive there anyway first thing tomorrow when they open and get another copy, but I am royally p***ed off.

Thankfully all the stores I spoke with tonight said that as far as they know my problem with a bad CD is unique so at least you guys aren't being swamped with this kind of problem. How about a little customer relations? Think I rate a complimentary T-Shirt or something for all the trouble this has caused me?

I'd like to think I could get something good out of all this mess. There's nothing more frustrating then finally getting a game you've waited for, and waited for and then finally when you have it in hand the d**n thing laughs at you!

*Sigh*

I guess I'll go read the manual

Before you drive 25 miles make sure it's not a CDROM problem. See the post "Setup Problems". I think there is a general issue with Super Socket 7 motherboards where the CDROM may be running in 16 bit DOS mode. I was running Half-Life and Janes WWII with "no" problems. Something in AlphaCentauri really needs a 32 bit CDROM driver. My hard-drive and CDROM are now much faster since I went to a 32 bit driver. A quick way to tell is if you have a line with MSCDEX in your Autoexec.bat & config.sys file your in 16 bit mode.

James I know the feeling...I got it yesterday and read the manual all day at work getting totally psyched to play...i load it and start playing....Im totally intrigued then it crashes
And now it crashes after like 5 minutes every game ...so i save often. but the problem is just as soon as i am getting engrossed in that ol' Civ way...it crashes. this is like some kind of cruel joke!!!!!!!!!
