Dear all, I've been playing the UK version oc SMAC and have got into a great position in the game. However the game crashes (with the notorious Terran.exe crash I believe. I missed all the discussion about the Terran crash and how to fix it. Would someone please help me as I cannot play the game anymore. And come on Firaxis - give us a European Patch. The following message appears with the crash if it's of any use. TERRAN caused an invalid page fault in |

Where does it crash? After playing for a while? If so, try reloading from a previous autosave (like 10 turns back). Also, try adding ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1 to the alpha centauri.ini file and/or disabling unit animations. Make sure you're not running out of HD space if the crash isn't repeatable and that windows manages your swapfile. jkm firaxis games |

It crashes in the year 2292. The precise moment is when it asks me if I want to upgrade existing units at no extra cost. No matter what I answer it crashes. |

...and I've tried all that you have suggested. Still crashes. Still frustrating. I've got so far in the game and cannot continue because if this error. It kinda makes me not want to play again incase the same thing happens. I'll check out my savegame on another machine tonight and hopefully that'll work. |

Just to add my voice to those complaining about this crash in Terran.exe. I have experienced this failure many times. The problem is (for me) intermittent, and started to occur after three or four hours of play (I haven't even been able to finish a game yet). The crash could happen mid-turn, or at the end-of-turn. Coincidentally, perhaps, these crashes occurred about the same time as I started to suffer from incipient DLL-rot which eventually resulted in a total windows re-install. I am unclear as to whether the one was the cause of the other, or in which direction. It could be completely unrelated (I think my machine was over-heating). Who knows? Anyway, my details are (it's an old system, so please don't laugh): UK version. I'm sure my mouse is totally irrelevant, but I've included it anyway. I haven't tried any of the suggestions mentioned here - I haven't even re-installed the game yet. I'll try it at the weekend. Cheers, Fred |

Just wanted to say "Hey ! Join the club." If you are interested I get that problem all the time (although I haven't tried the Force... thing yet... when I get home tonight maybe ?) I only got problems after loading/playing SMAC. I've since reloaded so many things that I am now getting crashes at other times too. (No it isn't a virus I've checked with 3 seperate up-to-date checkers.) I think I'll need to format the whole disk and start again soon. Ah, the fun of owning a PC ... |

Crashes that occur after prolonged periods of play may be related to virtual memory. Ensure you've got plenty of HD space and that windows is managing your swapfile. You also have the autosaves. The crash that is occuring at a specific date, send a save to me at [email protected]. I should be able to get you past it, if it's system problem. jkm firaxis games |

I played the game for 4 hours last night and lo and behold it crashed again. And it's a repeating crash that I can't get past. I think I'll give this game a rest now until Firaxis sort this problem out. It seems a lot of people have payed a lot of money to have a faulty and bugged game on their machine. Frankly I'm not HP. |

I know I'm not supposed to send this, but it seems to help. Since I hold EA (not Firaxis) responsible for their policy of 'one version per continent', I feel I can mention this. Protected software always causes more trouble than unprotected and, since I paid my license anyway, installing the US version helps, without keeping me awake because of bad vibes. So it does with SMAC. Around the threads, some people littered some URLs of the US TERRAN.EXE (this will turn your UK version into a US version). After that, get the patch and install. I'm not saying I'll email it to you, but you could give it a try I'm not HP either, nor am I Microsoft. But when it comes to these kind of things, I'd rather be the first Sorry Jeff... |

Jeff- You mentioned that there might be problems with virtual memory. Can you give us an idea of the maximum amount of memory that SMAC could use? This would help out a lot in understanding whether some of us can rule out low memory as contributing to all the game-ending crashes. Thanks. |

I may just be lucky but eversince changing from the UK terran.exe to the US one and running the v.2 patch I have not had a single crash despite running SMAC on an Overclocked 6X86 p120+ cyrix with a 2mg ATI Mach64 video card with 48mg ram. I have got all the wy through to 2650 so far without a single crash or lockup. I have not had to rename sound.dll or anything like that HOWEVER I have got the music turned off and fast move all units selected. I hope this helps |

Not really. It would be determined by the size of the map and the number of units. Just let windows manage your swapfile and have 100-200 megs free on that drive. jkm firaxis games |
