I've noticed in the demo that if you are researching a secret project but someone else gets it first you can no longer research it. Why is this? I was within 3 turns of getting the Genome Project and Lady Gaia got it first and immediately I was told that my base had created an Energy Bank even though the turn before it had said Human Genome Project.

Secret projects can only be built once. If some other player gets there first, you cannot complete it. The only way for you to get its special abilities is to capture the city it's in.
