Has anyone else noticed that when you're designing air units, sometimes when you give them a better armor the cost actually goes down? Before someone says that aircraft don't need armor, that's simply not true. There are a couple of situations where air units defend with their armor, despite what the rules say.

Check what special effects you have on your aircraft when the cost goes down. Some things (like Artillery, Trance, etc.) are dependent on the values your vehicle has. Arty=2*(Def+Spd-2), Trance=1*(Att/Def)
This becomes more of an effect after you get fusion power where A/D/S have a minimum cost between them, but the special effects add to the minimum cost.

It happens even with no special abilities, but only with very specific cominations. For instance, a helicopter with Tachyon Beam, no armor, fusion engine costs 60. Give it any armor from 2 through 5 and the cost goes down to 50.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Most of the time armor on aircraft is *FREE*, when under "Advanced Concepts" I think it said that aircraft armor was supposed to cost DOUBLE. However, I think it also says that some aircraft parts are half-price, but that there are some minimum costs that apply. My guess is that there's either a bug or the difference between "half-price" other stuff and the minimum more than absorbs the increased cost of armor. But I'm just guessing.

Anyway, armor on aircraft, as far as I know, is used defending any attack other than a "scramble". This includes bases -- so an armored aircraft represents a portable defense for a besieged city.

Given the extremely low cost of aircraft armor, it makes sense to do it.

It's a bug. Fixed in v3.0.
