When you use artillery the units you target seem to take very little damage indeed then if, after eons of bombarding you get it down to about 95% damage it stays at that level no matter what. Its impossible to destroy a unit with artillery by the sound of it - very bizarre.European Version.

In the Fine Manual, it specifically tells you that you can't destroy a unit with artillery, except in an artillery duel. This is a minimal touch of realism, not some sort of bug.

Realism? Ask the survivors of the Somme about how real artillery is - i'm very certain that artillery can easily destroy a unit. The English warship 'Hood' was completely destroyed by the guns of the Bismarck, whole field units of English and German infantry were wiped out in the huge artillery barrages of the first and second world wars. In the Gulf, artillery barrages coupled with MLRS (rocket artillery) had a significant impact on Iraqi forces. To say artillery simply can't destroy a unit is very strange indeed. Firaxis, why? |

It helps if you don't think about a unit as a single unit but rather as a squadron (or some other discrete military group measurement).

If considering a "unit" as a group I still think Arty should be able to whack cruisers and grav ships permanently. And since Arty cannot kill units I'd love to see the AI enemies spending their buck a tad better.Example: War against Provost P. Zakharov. I charge him with a host of missile rovers (6-1-2) and a few chaos silksteel dragons (8-4-2). He have dozens of artillery rovers and only very few "real" combat units. I quickly wipe them out in my turn and during his turn my guys are being shelled the hell out of. But they do not die. I then retreat my wounded forces to the nearest city for repairs while moving in fresh troops to charge his artillery batteries. And the againg getting shelled during his turn but never actually losing a single unit. I managed to wipe out his army and almost wiping him out untill he begged for mercy. Pah! Should have killed him, but I am too good. -- MOCKBa |

Arty is good in combined arms ... you said you retreated to the nearest city to heal your units ... if he'd shelled that city, even if no more damage was done, all the units would no have healed. Makes it very difficult to assault a place where you don't have a haven safe from the arty. True the AI goes overboard on the amount of arty it develops (should be about 1 in 5 IMO) but don't discount it altogether.James |

I did not discount it, I merely wish that the AI would build more sensibly. Anyway, I find it VERY difficult to hit anything with my own arty. Even though I click in the square my arty either misses or bombards the neighbouring square MOCKBa |
