Hello:I was running SMAC with an AWE64 Gold card but decided to switch to the new Diamond MX300 card this week. Now the sound is very scratchy and the volumes of the different voices vary. For example, when a new tech is finished the voice reading the message is very low and hardly audible - with the AWE 64 card all the volumes where identical. Anyone else have any problems with this particular soundcard? Ed

Have you reinstalled directx??And if you don't already have it, download directx 6.1, might clear things up a little. Juggler

Hmm, yes I did have some problems with Monster Sounds, although most of the major headaches seemed to have to do with my old Mystique card, hrmm.. Anyway, due to some reason, the sound (seemed) to improve after a full install. Don't ask me why Furthermore, since I turned DirectDraw - which I had to, due to my %& graphics card - I haven't really noticed any problems at all.Regards, Calanor

Just a note to confirm what others have already pointed out. Patching SMAC to 2.0 with an MX300 sound card does produce audio problems that weren't originally present. With the patch installed, I tried installing the latest A3D drivers and reinstalling DirectX6.1 both with no change. Only after unistalling SMAC then reinstalling without the patch could I get the problem to disappear. My question is does tech support read these posts or do we need to post elsewhere to let them know? |

I've found a solution to the sound problem! In reading what's new in the 2.0 patch I saw that DirectHardware 3D positional sound and EAX support was added. Unfortunately, I don't think the latest drivers from Diamond are DirectX6 certified which means we need to wait for the next drivers. Until then, you can disable DirectSound3D in the alpha centauri.ini by entering ds3d=0. Problem gone! The readme for the patch also mentions disabling EAX support with eax=0 though I didn't find this to be causing any problems enabled. Good luck! |
