I've only just bought the game - not been out long in UK - and it continually crashes at the moment that I first reach the main map screen, so I can't play it at all. The message that comes up is:

TERRAN.EXE caused a stack fault in module KERNEL32.DLL

and then it gives a load of hex addresses and stuff. I've tried fooling around with my systems settings and uninstalling and reinstalling the game but to no avail. I can't think what the problem is.

I am running the game through Windows 98 on an MMX Cyrix 6x86 processor at 300 MHz with a ATI 3D Rage II graphics card and 64 meg RAM. I've got a Soundblaster 16 and all drivers and stuff are up to date. My control panel reports no driver conflicts so I haven't a clue whta is going on

Anyone got any ideas???

I got the exact same problem. The error now appears everytime I tried to attack Hive units, which I was in war with. So now I can't play in that game anymore and it started to piss me off cause I've put so many hours in it. Firaxis, can you DO something???????

I'm not sure I had the exact same problem, but I'd get TERRAN.EXE crashing just before the movie... I have no idea how I fixed it, but I re-installed a few times, going from laptop to normal to full, deleting them, and trying for normal again -- and voila, it worked the 4th time. So there I was, starting my first game at 11:30 pm... you can guess how my next day was.

(You can tell from what I did that I play the Believers: distrust technology, have faith that things will work if you try hard enough, which is why you get the +25% bonus).

Start with the tweaks section in the readme.txt. These will address some of the common causes of this problem, regardless of your drivers. If none of them work, download DX 6.1 from www.microsoft.com/directX and see if that solves the problem. If not, run DXDiag.exe and look for "!" and notes about drivers to see if there is still a driver problem.

Yeah...Ok
looked at the tweaks section in readme.txt. Checked loads of stuff..blah..blah..yep already in 800x600 mode, my CD-Rom is running on 32 bit, I've got DirectX 6.1 and I've got 2.59 Gigs of harddrive left to spare. I've checked virtual memory settings and all that stuff and got all the latest drivers.

However, where it gets interesting is when I ran DXDiag.exe - despite having no driver conflicts listed, four of the DirectX Drivers were listed with exclamation marks because they haven't been certified by microsoft (very naughty) This is what I get for trying to have up-to-date drivers. Now this may not be what is causing the fault, but it's a bit too much of a coincidence. Trouble is, I can't seem to identify where the drivers come from. two of them are Soundblaster drivers (thanx to the boys and girls at Creative for providing drivers that stuff-up) The other two - esfm.drv & essmpu.drv I can't seem to place - anybody know where they came from?

Not sure where to go from here - might try disabling sound and see if this works, but I'm not too happy about playing with no sound - why doesn't this happen with any other games???

OK, I've just disabled the sound.dll and the game seems to be working (though i've only played for a short while. Let's not get too excited here, but I may have got round my crash problem - not too cool playing with no sound though.

The ess drivers are available at ESS Technologies- http://www.esstech.com/Technical/drivers/downloadable/drivers/driver.htm#These
though a lot of them haven't been tested for DirectX6 yet.
