I'm really confused how a curfew helps though.

23:30-0600 is hardly keeping any crowds down that, say, closing bars/clubs wouldn't do.

Its kinked. Bars, restaurants, take aways must close 11pm the latest. Nightshops even at 10 pm. The main reason is to give people half an hour to get home. I suppose the main reason is to crank down on private parties as well, and have a readily reason to pluck drunks ftom the streets.

I gotta ask what is meant by nightshop.

Just a shop (mostly sells liquor, biscuits and such) open at night. The owners are usually immigrants.
24/7 shops are by law forbidden here. So when the usual supermarkets close down for the night, nightshops take over. But with the pandemic, their opening hours are curtailed as well.

Former Republican Presidential Candidate, Herman Cain has died of C-19.  He had been at the Tulsa Trump Rally without a face mask.

Ah, I knew you'd have another phrasing for it. ;)
'Nightshop' is a literal translation from Dutch btw.

Here's the key part of a Washington Post article. This is how testing, genetic sequencing, and integrated contact tracing could have worked with resources at the federal level.

[“If you’re spending whatever money large organizations seem to be putting into large-scale testing,” MacInnis said, “throwing away that very same extracted [RNA] that could tell you about how cases are connected within your organization or within communities is just throwing away the crown jewels of what you really want to know.”

Genetic insights could be “invaluable” for communities balancing the need to control the virus with the desire to reopen, MacInnis said. Suppose four students at an elementary school became sick. If genetic analysis showed they shared a common strain, the virus was most likely transmitted at school, suggesting the facility should close or at least conduct a thorough review of infection-control procedures. But if the infections were genetically unrelated, it’s likely they independently contracted the illness elsewhere, in which case the students should stay home but the school could remain open. ]

Our latest Corona surge is (slowly) dropping again. But the devil is in the details. The initial infected region (city -and province of Antwerp) saw a dramatic decrease in new cases, but the capital area sees quite an increase now... and many of the jobstudents still at the workfloor live in Brussels. It will be another 2-3 weeks before the last of them go back to study.
The latest management announcement we had at work was one confirmed case in the other shift, luckily in a rather isolated team, with 2 extra put in precautionary quarantaine (symptoms claim).

thing is, how much throughput (the bandwidth of test that can be done in a systematic manner) and results time frame are they capable of?  At what point would they be overwhelmed with samples to test that would degrade the amount of true Pos/Neg to false results and increase the time until results?  If the results takes longer to get than the people would be possibly "sick", then it's sort of moot??

Yeah, sure, it's moot. But I think back to March and April and Lyin' Mike Pence's press conferences about all of the testing and contact tracing that was coming while we were locking down for" 30 days to slow the spread", and extensions. Of course, as you know, Governor Ron DiVirus  wasn't going to start a lock down until after Spring Break was over. What did it last? A week? Ten days?

Basically we failed the Sit on the Couch challenge. ( New Zealand aced this one. )
We failed the Testing and Contact tracing challenge. (South Korea aced this one. )
We are failing the Mask challenge. (Japan aced this one. )
I am certain we will fail the Everybody Get Vaccinated challenge, too.

The downside of freedom and diversity, or perhaps political polarization.

I'm so old I can remember the Iran Hostage Crisis and the popularity of a country music song by Charlie Daniels with the lyrics-
" 'Cause we'll all stick together,
And you can take that to the bank.
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks!"

You might think we could pull together to defeat an external threat, but apparently not.

I chose today to venture out and buy sweet corn and to get something at the garden supply store. Sadly most people were not wearing masks, in spite of a state-wide mask order. The neighboring county I was shopping in resents the Governor who issued the order, because he is from the other party. So they feel justified in defying him to assert their rights.

The substructure of the universe regresses infinitely towards smaller and smaller components. Behind atoms we find electrons, and behind electrons, quarks. Each layer unraveled reveals new secrets, but also new mysteries.
