scale of atomic blasts
« on: June 05, 2019, 03:05:35 am »
The scale of mushroom clouds in SMAC is surprisingly accurate.  This article provides a graphic comparing the biggest test bomb blasts to the height of Mt. Everest.  If you click on the image, it will animate a little bit.

Now unfortunately I think the scale of these blasts can make one wonder if the Fusion, Quantum, and Singularity blast radii are remotely large enough to represent their power.  Singularity should probably be more like the blasts in The Chronicles of Riddick, where about 12 of them obliterate the surface of a planet.

this description very much caught my attention, and i like it.

on huge map of planet the center continent can be sunk into the ocean with four well placed blasts. I have ached, ACHED, for the option to set off a planet buster at will instead of it needing to "run into something". With a weapon like this I obviously should just be able to say....

Morgan: "They refused my buy-out of Mount Planet!?!"
CFO: "Yang wouldn't listen to the profit breakdowns, and..."
Morgan: "Put a Quantum on the north side of the mountain, allow the base to survive. Show them how we negotiate when our competitors refuse to deal."

Oddly enough you can release the blast of a Tectonic Missile, you don't hit things with it.  Think that's true of a Fungal Missile as well.  So the mechanism existed at least as of the Alien Crossfire expansion pack.

It is altogether fitting that we who have sailed the deeps of space now return again to the sea. This is in many ways a water planet, and it can be ruled from the waves. With sea power, rugged terrain can be bypassed and enemy strongholds isolated. Once naval superiority is achieved, Planet is ours for the taking.
