Amazing news! In the Clinton impeachment hearings, Speaker-elect Roberty Livingston, said he would not take the Speaker position and would resign from Congress in Mid-1999, to set an example. As most of you might know, it was found out that Livingston had an affair, so he has decided to leave public office, in hopes of convincing Clinton to do the same. You can hear some of his speeh on CNN.com. Also at CNN.com, you can heat Tom Delay, Majority Whip (not what it sounds like), in an emotional speech, call Mr. Livingston the greatest man in America, at least for today. Your thoughts?

Guess he figured that he would have to leave anyway might as well leave with people thinking he was a good guy. Just PR, a way of geting out and maybe haveing a career in some other political job.

I think that it is a horrible day. Both sides want him to reconsider. He is a man that can push bipartisanship. However, he decided on principle rather than power. He still has support, but he made an honorable decision. It is interesting that to get impeachment through, the Republicans, basically gutted their Speakers. A sad day indeed, it sets a dangerous precedent. That innocent men must leave the office for these matters. It has happened since the mid-80s and now it is coming to the threshold. May God Bless America, and see it through this dark time.

Its not that much of a dark time. This really has been blown WAY out of propotion. Great thing about the American system of goverment is that people can be replaced extremly easily and quickly.

And if the Republicans want to gut themselves i say let them. Makes it easer for Gore to win in 2000...

Bah. If Livingston had as much integrity as he wants us to think, he would have confessed his transgressions and resigned his seat immediately after they happened. If the press had never found out about this, you can bet that the Speaker-elect wouldn't be falling on his sword now and trying to milk his 'repentance' for political gain.

Lord knows, I have no great love for Clinton, but this whole sorry episode reeks of a partisan witch hunt.

This is a dark day, when men fall for these transgressions. Livingston could have usured in a bipartisan Congress, but not anymore. The Republicans have shown themselves to be the party of integrity and morals. Livingston's speech was one of the best I've heard. When he said "God bless America", both side jumped up, and gave him a standing ovation. Democrats have urged him to reconsider. Yes, America will bounce back, but with a Republican president, and his name will be George Bush, Jr. We will set this nation right, one again!

What, no one thinks Hogan could win?

Heh. :-)

BTW, Imran, if not doing something is a crime, then is doing it a virtue?

With shock and surprise, I have to agree with Imran on this one. I can maybe understand Livingston giving up the Speakership, but there's no reason at all that he should resign his seat as well. I can't help but wonder if this was completely his decision or if he was pressured into it. One word of censure though Imran, lets not start attributing characteristics to the individual parties. Each side has their best, Gephart and Livingston come to mind, and both have their fair share of lesser men too. Just out of curiousity, which Bush brother?

I am going to go kind of against the flow on this one. Livingston's resignation almost seems to be a bad thing to me but not for reasons of bipartisanship. The man did not make a mistake. A one-time thing might be a mistake but an affair is a blatant disregard of his commitments. Then again, he has dealt with the issue truthfully (at least he has now).

By staying put and proving that he can work through problems is a much better example than the one he hopes to make. I don't see the gain in fighting to keep the government puritanical. I do see a gain in him admitting his guilt then following a path of redemption. Just leaving office seems like he is running away from the problem. A lot of people mess up their lives and I would like to see some people working through their problems.

But now I must say that he should resign. Pulling back on what he just said he would do will only hurt his image. I do not think he is resigning just to save a political career, I think he is doing it to save his character-legacy.

I did not think Livingston should have resigned, but what is done is done. I agree with Outlyr that Livingston should not change his mind now. He did this so that he wouldn't be seen as a hypocrite, which is a false assumption anyway. No one is accusing Congressman Livingston of the heinous crimes committed by the President. Anyway, to answer Antium's question, I'm for George Bush, Jr. like I said before. Oh, Antium, I didn't know you were from Princeton. You're like a 1/2 hour from me!

Oh, please...

I just don't get it, the American official moral expects people to live like little cherubs, yet American people are the horniest I've ever met.

I mean, do people vote on policy or number of "illicit" blowjobs?

Jeez, this latest twist only brings this "avatarism" to new levels.

Now, could we turn our attention to the upcoming masterpiece SMAC? That's what we're here for, after all...

I live in Lousiana now. And the people down here are not to shocked by this. Livingston has said for 2 years that he wanted to get out of the Congress. He had to be talked into runing again.. Most people already thought this would be his last term. So i think the country should not make to much of this, he probibly would have retired anyway.

O yea, i do not think the baby Bush will win. That last one was bad enough, why have another?

What?! Hoth, you suck!! Sorry, I didn't mean to do that. George Bush was a great President. Did you see how he handled Iraq? His hand of foriegn policy was firm and powerful. The recession wasn't his fault, and in his last year, the economy had already recovered and was growing (the same growth Clinton took credit for). George Bush, Jr. is easily the most popular politician in the nation. In 1994 (1994!!), in a poll people picked Bush over Gore 45%-42%. Now, no doubt the gulf has risen. Bush, like his father is a moderate, and (maybe) unlike his father, he does extremely well with women and Hispanics. His education record in Texas is suburb, and he can fix our schools from a national level. He will be our nations savior after this tawdy affair.

This is just too good!

Imran: "No one is accusing Congressman Livingston of the heinous crimes committed by the President."

Just for the record: Clinton is just accused, not convicted.

Imran: "When he said "God bless America", both side jumped up, and gave him a standing ovation."

Ever heard of Pawlow's dog ? Amazing how this works in Congress...

Imran: "Also at CNN.com, you can heat Tom Delay, Majority Whip (not what it sounds like), in an emotional speech, call Mr. Livingston the greatest man in America, at least for today."

Intresting thing. Goto

If I'd grow up, I'd be so old, I'd be dead! No!!!

Sorry, that's why the is there. But I just couldn't resist, it was too good, as I think a flamethrower would be very appropriate for Delay. Hey, DJ did the same with one of my posts, feel free to use my next typo for a joke!

God bless America (cause America needs it)!

well, i'm surprised, Imran, with you being disappointed with his typos...

Roland, it's not Pawlow's Dogs, it's Pavolv's dogs...or at least, that's the internationally accepted romanization.
