I'm just very impressed with the fact that Domk is the most offensive non-American and the second-most offensive American. Not to mention that he's first in pissing people off and first in people who would be smacked.

Woo-hoo! Hivester of the Year, Defender of the Hive, and tied for overall Defender of the Faith! I haven't been here as long as a lot of the other nominees, but I guess I've made an impression . Thanks everybody.

Dammit, I guess I should have stuck around longer! Why in my prime I could've been someting I could've been a contender. Now I look to Mike and YYYH...

At least the master got to see his students surpass him.

Well, thanks everyone that voted in the awards, regardless of who you voted for.

I'd just like to say thanks to my parents, who made all this possible, my director...

Hang on, where'd everyone go all of a sudden? Everyone walked out. Oh well, just have to go play in the corner with my awards.

Seriously, congrats to everyone who won an award. And thanks to everyone, whether you were nominated or not, voted or not, for helping participate in the SMAC forums. All of your input has helped make this a great place to hang out.

But I can't believe I won so many. I feel humbled.

Thank you all.

Yeah. Let's just say Domk didn't make the best of impressions.

Well, well. Tied for UoPer of the Year and second to The TAS for Best on Topic. Thank you, thank you. Congrats to all.

Arnelos, thanks for your work!

Let's see...

A tie for best off topic post, nice.

37 % for best liberal, 38 % for best socialist...talking about split personalities... does that make me "best leftie from a US perspective" ? And why have I forgotten to suggest the category for "Best split personality" ? Ah yeah, I was someone else at the time...

And the PK defender award is so well-balanced... typical PK, what ?

Well, well.

I think the positive awards and nominations are all well-deserved, _but_ I am a bit shocked that got votes in the categories

SMACER YOU WOULD LOVE TO SMACK (83% turnout)
and
MOST OFFENSIVE NON-AMERICAN (78% turnout).

Actually, I'm a bit surprised that so many voted in these categories. Personally, I neither nominated nor voted for anyone in the negative categories.

I won't presume to know who voted for me (rather, against...), but seeing as I tend to make a point of being explicitly serious or jocular, I guess the votes on me are probably serious, something I've a feeling doesn't apply to Domk and Red Dog, who (IMHO) were no more than nuisances, if that, and at times humorous... Thus, I regard the votes on those two as "humorous" expressions of group dynamics. I may be wrong on this one, maybe votes on me were meant in "good fun", and maybe votes on Domk and Red Dog were totally serious precursors to flame wars and vicious spamming.

No matter, all I can say is that I've failed, since my aim was to have fun, and argue for things I deem true/believe in. If some of you react to that by deeming me "most offensive non-American"/wanting to smac me more than anyone else, that makes me sad.

I don't know, maybe I should leave this forum. There's not as much room for individual thought as my first impression indicated...

No matter, this post ends here, before I get really angry or sad.

Tap: Sure there is room. You just need to have a thick skin to survive in this weird place known as the Internet. I never bothered defending you, as I thought you'd be perfectly capable of handling the burden yourself.

Regarding Domk and Red Dog, I agree with you: They were more humourous than offensive in my view (particularly Red Dog). In fact I almost felt bad for scaring Domk away - he was probably just a kid.

Bottom line: Don't leave.

DCA,
One of these days, I'll be old enough that people will stop calling me crazy and start calling me eccentric.

Anyways, Arnelos, great job !!!

Even though, I didn't win any catagory outright, I did a hell of alot better in some fields than I thought !!! But, I can't for the life of me understand how I didn't win most vocal Athiest though ??? There were like 2 or 3 100 post threads of just me and LarryBoy debating each other till pigs actually started to fly !!!

Anyways, thanks to all for supporting me !!!

This is almost anticlimactic, I'm going to cry, this little family we've had going is surely about to die off into something new !!! With the hundreds of new people soon to join, and many of us on our way out, this forum will never be the same !!! *sniff*

"Believer of the Year"

In the name of Sister Miriam and the Lord's Believers, thank you everyone for your support. I see, however, that it was a close contest with Saint Randerolf. I propose that Saint Randerolf and I join hands in the glory of the true path toward enlightenment and righteousness (not to mention the 3X-attack bonus). It will be good.

Your humble SMACer,
jsorense
Bearer of the Faith, Defender of the Faithful, Avenger of Martyrs

P.S. Many, many thanks to Arnelos for all the work he put into this poll. May Sister Miriam bless his heart.

Whoops, I almost forgot! Thank you all who voted for me! Morgan thanks you as well (ok, so maybe he doesn't, but he'll send you some cash!). Uncle Sam also thanks you on behalf of me. Nationalist of the Year, Most Offensive American, Best Morganite, Conservative of the Year! Oh, and I am soo suprised that BoS did so well, for being such a young club (which is why I didn't vote for it, and voted for the I club instead). Anyway, thanks, and Cheers (holds up champagne glass).

I find it very impressive that I won defender of the faith for the UoP, a faction whose philosophy I've never expoused. I'm a PK!

[Thank you to all you voted for me, though. It's nice to win, even if one doesn't have a clue why one won.]

Also, congrats all around to those who were nominated and who received votes.

Lastly, thank you Arnelos for holding this contest.

Arnelos posted 12-17-98 04:53 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Arnelos  Click Here to Email Arnelos
Thank you all for all the wonderful thanks.

It made it all worthwhile.

Now, some analysis to share with you all:

1. The most internally loyal group were the Canadians. I had more Canadians vote all the way done the line for DJ RRebel, the 8th Canadian Faction, and other Canadians than any other consistency in voting. The Canadians made up a significant portion of the people who voted too. Although DJ RRebel and the 8th Faction didn't actually win, a congrats to the Canadians for being so effective.

2. I was myself surprised at how much people who had nothing to do with an award got nominated and subsequently voted for such awards. I think, in the case of the UofPer awards, that it was very simple. Most people abstained. Then someone came along and nominated some people. Many of the people who voted after that just picked *someone* to be their vote.

3. I was surprised that turnout was higher for nationalist/internationalist, which were uncontested, than it seemed the majority of the contested awards were.

Yes, thank you all for Gaian of the year and Liberal of the year. Though I know I nominated my opponent in Gaian of the year, and I think I nominated Roland for liberal of the year (though I'm not sure). Thanks anyway, and congratulations to all the winners! Especially... nah, I can't say. It was probably you there reading this I was going to say though.

I'm so proud of my Canadians !!!

In fact, we Canadians are know for having the highest turnouts for elections in the world !!!

The 78% turnout at the last provincial election in Quebec was considered a low turnout !!!

We've had 92% & 95% turn out in our last 2 referendums !!!

Voting is a responcibility we should all take seriously !!! (Now I feel really stupid for not voting in here though !!! LOL)

Arnelos posted 12-18-98 06:47 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Arnelos  Click Here to Email Arnelos
DJ RRebel, the high voter turnout in Quebec has nothing to do with a superiority of political culture. It has EVERYTHING to do with the sovereignty issue. In countries where questions like "What type of government do we want to have?" and "What types of general laws are we going to have?" are pretty much answered, voter turnout is very low. In a country where the SOVEREIGNTY of the country is at stake, it's pretty certain you're going to have very HIGH voter turnout. Why? easy: there's so much at stake. That's why the highest voter turnouts in the world are currently in Quebec and Bosnia (why Bosnia? easy, THE STAKES ARE SO HIGH).

This goes with "class stuggle" too. If open class struggle exists, voter turnout is going to be much higher than in places where nearly no-one cares about class struggle (the U.S. for instance).

It really is pretty much that simple. The more at stake, the more people vote.

Roland posted 12-19-98 03:55 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Roland  Click Here to Email Roland
Arnelos, on voter turnout: also has to do with traditions and other things. For example, in austria it is pretty clear that the current "big" coalition will stay in power, there is no more class struggle than in the US, but any turnout below 80 % would be a gig surprise...

I've always read your posts with interest. In my eyes, they have been well-tought and intelligent, or, alternatively, funny.

The result must be some kind of statistical surrealism ;-)
