Inspired by Maya's thread asking what game she should get...

How important is a good intro to your enjoyment of the game? What are you favorite game intros? Any that struck you as being really horrible?

Personally, I like a good intro. If it's bad, it won't spoil the game, but I think it can really help make a good impression and help get you "in the mood".
As for my favorites, I think Fallout had the best opening I've ever seen. Fallout 2 was also very good, but I liked the song in the original better. Although some people probably hated it, I thought that the opening movie for Shogo was also quite good as it set the stage and helped reinforce the anime theme of the game. MOO2 also had a nice opening movie.

Those are the only ones where I have repeated let the opening movie play. Usually I just watch it once and then hit the space bar or whatever to skip past it after that.

So, what are your favorites? (I gather some of you like Half-life's intro, eh? )

To tell you the truth, game intros aren't that important to me, because once I've had the game for a while I just want to skip past the intro and play. Same thing goes for in-game cinematics like Wonders in Civ2. The videos are cool, but after a while, I tend to skip them.

Having said that, I have definitely enjoyed my share of game intros. My favorite intro is for Battlezone and my favorite in-game cinematic is for Starcraft.

I thought that the civ 2 wonder movies were sweet. I particularly loved the Galileo and UN ones

I liked the Leo's movie best.
The F2 intro music's pretty cool, IMO.
Thief has a good intro and nice between level cutscenes, and the music in them is great.

I like Half-Life's intro a fair bit, especially if (as I do) you count the 'getting to work' part of the game as part of the intro.

I count that bit, It's good that it's all done with the game engine so you can stare at those cool yellow walker things as you go past until they are out of site. I count it as intro until the "accident"

I have to agree with CClark, Fallout has the best intro hands down, with Fallout 2 second. Actually I think that some of the EA Sports games have pretty good intros, eventhough they are only video clips.
Mechcommander has a pretty atmospheric intro as well.
