Actually, I was hoping Sid Meier's next game will be this one. With the amount of dicussion in these forums and the old ones, and no doubt many extra ideas floating around, I think it's about time for the ultimate 'ultimate version' of this game. (and they have the license. That should indicate a willingness to do something along these lines.)

While SMAC will no doubt be a great game, the future tense is always less interesting than past history. I find there are so many areas in CivII that could be improved, either drastically or subtly.

Obviously the decision is Sid's, but I don't think there would be too much complaining about Firaxis producing another turn based game, especially a proper update to THIS one.
(Personally, I don't rate Call To Power. I'm not sure I'd buy it, and I definitely don't regard it as the sequel to CivII).

Firaxis has the license for CIV3? Are you sure? That's definitely news to me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Microprose had the license to the Civ title. If Microprose has the title, then it's highly unlikely that Firaxis would create Civ3. I'm of the impression that Firaxis wants to move on to other projects. Projects that further development from the Civ launching pad, without being a rehash of Civ.

Considering that Activision and Microprose had a big fight over the Civilization name/license, it would be quite something for Firaxis to step in and claim the license!

As for making Civ3, I think SMAC is Civ3. One good thing about SMAC being slightly delayed is that we know it's given Sid some more time to further develop one or more prototypes for Firaxis' next game, whatever that will be.

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that the Firaxian legal team had outmaneuvered Activision by buying the license from the original holder - though you may be right, it could be microprose instead.

Activision definitely doesn't have it, but is allowed to call it's new game Civilisation: Call to Power, as a consession after all the legal wrangling over it.

Incidently, this is why the expansion to CivII was called Civ2: Fantastic worlds, instead of Civilisation2 - Microprose had already lost the license to Activision.

It definately wasn't FIRAXIS that won it.

IIRC, Microprose is doing "Ultimate CIV II", Activision is doing "CCTP" and another company is doing "Advanced Civilisation II".

That last one could have just been something to di with the game "Advanced Civilisation" that was released a while ago, and I'm getting it confused with a sequel....

Oh, and Microprose is also doing CIV II Multiplayer (or is it called CIV II Gold? Definately a separate game to "Ultimate CIV II".

That was Microprose -- and they came out pretty much completely on top with botht the computer right and the rights previously held by Avalon Hill for the board game. Of course, then Hasbro bought both Avalon Hill and Microprose out, so that's kind of a moot point.

Microprose won the court battle to hold the title of Civilization. That is why the game is called Civilization:call to power.

Read PCGAMER......huge article about civ.

What's this I hear about an update to CivII, with multiplayer though?

I went to microprose home site and it says anyday now, as if it might already be out.

I didn't see that in the PCGamer mag article you mentioned. Anybody got any info?

Yeah, that is CIV II Gold. Contains CIV II, Multiplayer support, and the add-on packs, Conflicts in Civilization and Fantastic Worlds. I haven't checked recently on the release date, though I believe New Year.

It is by Microprose.
