How about the ability to send out units that can set or deactivate booby traps on squares. The traps can range from landmines that only damage land vehicles, to proximity psi-bombs. Advancing troops should always pack along a bomb detector unit or risk running into a trap.

I think that the scale of the squares on the map makes this implausible. I suspect that this sort of thing is rolled into a fortification bonus (assuming they have forts like in Civ).

I do think it would make sense if you could perform some sort of terrain upgrade to make squares cost more movement points to move through. It should also be possible to "improve" terrain such that the defense of any units in it are reduced (the opposite of a good-terrain bonus). This would allow you to construct elaborate fortifications. Your units are protected in their fort, but when your enemies try to move in to attack, they get bogged down, and are stuck out in the open where you can mow them down.

Well, even if the squares are pretty big, you could still "booby-trap" major roads, bridges and other places of strategic interest, effectively booby-trapping that entire square (from a high level of abstraction POV). The effect could be reduction of movement points and perhaps some damage.

Anyway, I definitely support static defenses, defensive terrain manipulation etc.

DCA,
Assassination is the fastest way.

Well, it certainly would create a dungeon keeper like feeling.

Could increase the fun, but it also can decrease the motivation, if you always have to send units to the front that are capable of deactivating units.

Yes, I agree with Octopus on this one, it's a very interesting idea, but in the long run, it'll just be anoying ... besides, we'll be able to teraform mountains and stuff !!!
