This is to lobby for Abdiel to post the origin of his username.

OK ... I'll lobby too !!!

FYI, lobby in french is Rez-de-Chausser, or RC in elevators !!!
So for those of you in an elevator in Quebec, if you want to go to the lobby, press RC !!!

Mind you, if you come to where I work, The Montreal Casino, you'll be really confused to find both "L" & "RC" .. (they are actually 2 different floors !!!

In England press G for ground. LG for lower ground.

I don't know who Abdiel is but I really want to know about their user name.

Of course, nobody has to worry about pressing anything in England because nobody every uses their "elevators". For some unknown reason, they're called "lifts".

Also, make sure you go to the toilet before you visit England. They are no public "washrooms"--you have to look for the WC. (But not a WPC, eh Mike! )

MikeH II posted 12-01-98 06:11 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MikeH II  Click Here to Email MikeH II
I think you would get into a LOT of trouble trying to urinate in a WPC.

I'd look for the Public Toilets if I was in Britain (actually I am) I haven't seen WC on a street sign for years.

They are called lifts because they lift you up. Seems just as sensible as elevators to me.

Roland posted 12-02-98 05:23 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Roland  Click Here to Email Roland
What ? Public washrooms ? I'd prefer public mushrooms, and a serious spelling problem....

Mike, the germans call an elevator "Aufzug", but we prefer the term "Lift". Did you Brit guys do an assimilition that I didn't realize ? Clever bastards...

How about Swedish 'hiss' for lift/elevator? The word is kin to Sw. 'hissa'/Eng. 'hoist'... I mean just in case you were thinking of onomatopoetic words for snake sounds...

Hey, Abdiel! Where are you?!?!

While waiting for him to show up, we could post possible origins.

I'll start: How about the names of angels, whether fallen or not?

It may be his own name ... I know an Israelite whose name is Adiel...

Next time you people go to a lift/elevator/hiss/Aufzug, look at who made it. If your from Europe, the sign will propably say KONE. And no, the lift is not from Japan it's from Finland.

So, I proubly must confess:
FINLAND MOVES THE WORLD!!!

BTW kone means a machine, I bet the creator of the company wasn't all that creative.

DJ RREbel: Well, where I live there is a RC, but its not at the level of the street. If you want to get out you got to go to 1. Well, after being stuck 45 days between RC and 1, and finally escaping by asking for help on the Elevator Makers of Quebec online help center with my home made laptop and internet connection (youll never know what you can do with elevators spare pieces ), I got out and complained to my buildings administrator, but they didn't listen!!!

Anyway, keep informing people, or they too, will net to connecton the net with an elevator.

Certainly Finland rocks!

However, you should now, that in Norwegian 'kone' means 'rouva', or, for you non-Finnish-speakers out there, 'woman'!

You're absolutely right, by the way, quite a few 'hissit' here were made by KONE.

(There's the ones made by Hgglunds, of course...)

Tapiolan poika posted 12-03-98 07:37 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Tapiolan poika  Click Here to Email Tapiolan poika
What I wanted to say was, that if the Finnish company namer knew Norwegian, maybe he _was_ creative: 'KONE' - 'kone' - 'woman' - "carrier" of children - lift!!!

How about that one?!

I doubt it, because it was established in the 50's by the government and all of those companies have simple names, like Neste, which means liquid(the company refines and sells gasoline). Too bad it changed it's name to Fortum, which means nothing in Finnish.

And one more not owned by the government:
Nokia, founded in the city of (surprise) Nokia

Hmm, on second thought I might actually be wrong - 'kone' is not commonly used where I grew up.. Sheesh, now I'm confused.. maybe it could be used to say, like, 'old woman'..?

Hmm, the Tower of Babal? Yeah, that must be it, we're in the Tower of Babal! We're getting closer God, I'll be joining you up in heaven in no time!! I won't be dead either. Mwu hahahaha.

Not to many elevators 'round here. The ony one we have in my relative area is the one in my school, but that's only for kids with broken/sprained/etc legs. If you're persuasive enough, I guess you can go in with a broken arm as well. I've never been in it, because I've never broken a bone(lucky me!), so I won't know what company makes it. The ones in New Haven & Bridgeport & the such are made by a company, which one? I don't know, I haven't really payed attention to it.

Abdiel, I care as well. Please post the origin of your username!! Has someone e-mailed him & asked him about it?

More babble for the great Tower of Babal!!

Well, I haven't been on the boards since I posted that message, I believe. That's a long time ago. . .

At first, I wasn't going to respond. . .
But, Tapiolan is on to something, and I was impressed with his/her(?) luck. So, in all fairness, a hint.

It IS the name of an angel, though most certainly NOT a fallen one. . .

I've never heard of an angel named Abdiel! Then again I don't know the names of too many angels, really just Michael the arch-angel. You know, the one who defeated Satan. Satan's the one who lives in hell with a bunch of fallen souls, he's red, has a tail, & carries a pitchfork. Did you know he made a bet with God while he was still in heaven. Go read 'The Book of Job'. I believe that was it. I know more about my religion than I thought. Cool.

Michael: the one who beat Satan?
To what are you referring? Jesus beat Satan, and Jesus is no angel. . .

ANyway, Abdiel is not a biblical angel, that is, he's not in the Bible. He is, however, an angel.

Yeah: there are only 2 and a half angels mentioned by name in the Bible, Gabriel, Micheal, and Lucifer, who only counts as half an angel, for obvious reasons.

Ten thousand, and we only hear about two. Oh well, the main focus isn't on the angels anyway, more on the sorry condition of the human race, contrasted by the greatness of God. No atheistical remarks, please.

Thanks for posting, Abdiel! One thing - what do you mean, "luck"?!?!?!

It's "his", by the way. I like the fact, that you didn't jump to any conclusions. However, you've also just told us that you don't know Finnish (or Swedish, with a bonus extensive knowledge of etymology...).

We're slowly finding out everything about you. (Using MIBs, VIBs or any other potentially violent methods would just be too easy - apart from being unsavoury and lacking in refinement.) .), and !), and

And _yes_, for all of you curious readers - we _are_ going to have a decided presence in _your_ neighborhood, as well. (Have to protect the peace...)

One other thing - I take umbrage at violence committed in threads patrolled by us peacekeepers. SnowFire, 3YH, you're both welcome here, but leave the rubber chickens and the petrol outside the thread next time.

I guess slapping SnowFire with a crowbar is OK, since he asked for it, but 3YH wanted to be slapped with a 'runner' chicken (whatever _that_ is?) and got a faceful of rubber instead - that's downright rude, if you ask me!

Ahhh, the sound of air raid sirens on a Monday afternoon...

Did you know that there's a Swedish SF novel with the title "Monday at Three p.m." (Well, the Swedish counterpart, of course.) by one Bertil Mrtensson?

The premise is, the first Monday every month at 3 p.m. the air raid sirens are tested, so that's the ideal time to nuke Sweden...

(Why? Don't ask me, this was written in the 70s.)
