Did any of you notice the different Faction Logos? One of the screenshots at the IGN.PC preview revealed new logos for some of the factions. I posted the full story on my web page.

What do you think about them?

The PK logo is cool, but i don't like the UoP logo. Just because Zhakarov is Russian, doesn't mean I want to have a hameer and sickle as a logo. Russian Science wasn't very advanced, especially not in my field (Molecular genetics), so i think they should dump that logo, but that is of course just my opinion.

Yes, Jason, I did notice them. However, Firaxis hasn't changed them on the Factions section here although they have changed Saratov to Zakharov.

As I have stated many times before, what I would like to see is a description of each of these faction symbols. I also would love to see an explanation of the meaning of each of the elements that make up these symbols much in the way that heraldry is treated. I do see a problem, though, if they are still working on them this late in the production.

Maybe all will be revealed in the manual.
OK, OK, this is the last time I'll bring this topic up.

Soviet science not advanced????? Until a few
years before Gorbatchev, the Soviets were the best of the best of the best in a lot of fields, although maybe not yours, BoomBoom...
In anything theoritical (the practical was impossible, well, for practical reasons), it was the soviets which had the best minds.

Ok...aside from the quality of Soviet science, which this thread has nothing to do with, do you think that the logos are better? Do you think that they suit the factions? Let's give Firaxis some feedback on this!

I think it was a great idea to give the Peace Keepers the U.N. futuristic logo. This is exactly what I wanted for them.

I also like the new University logo. I'm not sure what it is at the centre, but I like it.

I'm also glad that they got rid of the old Human Hive logo. It wasn't really great and I thought that it was a little too simplistic.

I agree that the new logo for Lal is an improvement. However, I'm not too excited about the other ones. I like the new Hive logo a little better, but I like both of the Morgan ones quite a bit. Both the old one and the new one are my favorites. Finally the old wrench for UoP worked well except for being too dark, something that the new logo doesn't do much about. If the new one had a better atom in it I think I'd like it though. Santiago's logo is the only one that I really don't like. And while a simple logo fits the Spartan's simple minds, the illusion of depth might be a good thing. Perhaps each faction will have a couple of choices for their logo. Actually, it would be great if the logo evolved with the faction, keyed in with some of the government or societal options.

A couple other things... Did the site kits that Firaxis released have the old logos in it? I'm guessing they didn't have the new ones in though. And Jason, do you think you can put the old ones up next to the new ones? Also, I really like the new layout at BeyondAC. Tons of eye candy without having to wait for too many animations.

Yes, I'd love to post a reply to this, but where are the old logos? I forget most of them.

I agree that the Spartans have a really awful logo. Something mysterious would work best.

The big problems with trying to change the Spartan Federation Logo too much is that:
1) It is on all the Spartan base symbols of the screen shots and cut scenes.
2) All the Spartans got tatooed with it in Episode 22, Part 2 (ouch).

Indeed, Moscow and St. Petersburg are both in the top five publishing cities in Europe for physics(the others are Paris, Geneva, Warsaw). Narrowed to condensed matter physics, Moscow and St. Petersburg are nos 1 and 2, with Paris, Berlin, and Stuttgart filling out the top 5. Their physicists have always been excellent, giving us such people as Lev Landau(wrote the "Course of Theoretical Physics" with E. M. Lif****z, including one of the seminal works on QED), Andrei Sakharov, etc.

Argh, make that Lif-s-h-i-t-z(I hope this goes through. Just another example of how horrible censoring algorithims can be.).

Btw, physics in our university (Novosibirsk) called this book 'Landaf****z' - in normal practice of shortening of long names...

Good point w/ the tatoos. The diplomacy shot in the Gallery has all the old logos. Another possibility is that IGN edited the factions to see how hard/easy it was. But it's sort of doubtful they would have gone to so much effort. Also, I noticed that some of the logos are shown in the Factions section, including the old UoP one, while others aren't. I'm thinking there's an AOL/Netscape/Firaxis conspiracy here. Time to get an independant council.

PS. Anyone else lossing their connection w/ everything other than this board?

I definitely don't like the hammer&sickle of the University. And I'm not too keen on the ying-yang symbol for Yang. I thought the whole rationale of using the factions as opposed to the civs in Civilization was to divorce the game from nationalistic and ethnic concerns, focusing on philosophical differences.

Although I don't really like the Hammer & Sickle estheticly, they stood for alot more than we think !!! It's easy to shoot down the Russians for being "commies", but the truth of the matter is, that if there wasn't so much corruption by many individuals in power, and the need to impose communism on the rest of the world, then communism "might" have worked ... the hammer and sickle represent a strong cohesive labor force of equals .. or so I think .. I didn't actually put any reseach into this though !!! Let me know if this isn't the case !!!
Andrew Kasantsev posted 11-25-98 12:34 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Andrew Kasantsev  Click Here to Email Andrew Kasantsev
If I remember correctly, Hammer&Sickle is very OLD symbol, in the same row as svastika, yin/yan and celtic cross. But I agree, that it is BAD symbol for faction which had emphasied science/technology, because H&S mean peasant/worker... So wrench/testtube union seems better.

1. The PK logo is sooooooo nice! I really love it. It's also on the PK headquarters screenshot. The two stars and Chiron, I guess...

2. On hammer and sickle... Austria's seal has an eagle with hammer and sickle, and a crown looking like a city wall. (To prevent errors: Austria's never been a communist country, whatever some american choirs touring in europe may believe). Hammer: workers, Sickle: Farmers, Wall-crown: Citizens or bourgouisie, if you want.

3. An idea for the UoP: The old seal of the german democratic republic had a ... ehm, what's the word for the thing you use to draw circles ? a pair of deviders (?) or so ? Anyway, this was to represent the intelligentsija (sorry to all the russians for spelling). That would be more appropriate IMO. Hey, if you help me with the spelling, I could send the idea to firaxis ?

Roland posted 11-25-98 06:06 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Roland  Click Here to Email Roland
I just took a look at the UoP logo at Jason's site. (On the screenshots it was hard to identify anything) Hey, where's the hammer ? And the "sickle" may be some futuristic tool.

Or do we have two versions of the *new* UoP logo now?

DJ RRebel posted 11-25-98 08:39 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for DJ RRebel  Click Here to Email DJ RRebel
I still don't understand why the Hammer and Sickle ... Russia doesn't even use them anymore !!!

It's a politically unwise decision from Firaxis !!!

The thing in the centre of the UoP logo looks like a cogwheel.

Politically unwise decision?.... who said that Firaxis had to take-in political considerations when making a decision about a game?

I think that all of the changes in the logos are an improvement, except maybe the Morgan Industries logo. I think that's the only one that needs work.

DJ RRebel posted 11-25-98 10:36 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for DJ RRebel  Click Here to Email DJ RRebel
I just mean that some people could get offended !!!
Anyways .. I just took a peek, and from your site, it looks more like a sickle and a sickle .. I didn't see any hammer !!!

Regardless .. I don't really like either the new or the old too much ... and UoP is my favorite faction !!! I hope they tweek with it a little more !!!

And I wish they would drop the H in zakharov ... the H is to be pronounced not spelled !!!

Zakarov is the most likely spelling !!!

Anyways, it looks good !!!

Let's all calm down here about faction logos. I see two possibilities:
1. Firaxis sent a Beta with these new faction logos to test them out on us. If this is the intention, it worked, this thread being proof.
2. Faction logos are customizable, right. If so, maybe the previewer on ign changed the faction logos to take advantage of the ability to customize the logos. He is a previewer right, and should check out all the features in the game.

Bottom line, the logos in the factions sections have not changed and this website is official not screenshots from a preview.

DJ RRebel posted 11-25-98 11:26 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for DJ RRebel  Click Here to Email DJ RRebel
I don't think a BETA tester and a reviewer would have the time to develop 7 new logos !!! Nor would he/she probably bother ... maybe one at most just to see if it work .. but not 7 !!!
Roland posted 11-25-98 11:43 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Roland  Click Here to Email Roland
And the new PK logo is not only in the preview, but also on the PK headquarters screenshot from the firaxis site...

Ya, I noticed that too, but I wasn't sure what that was for. I didn't realise that it was representing the PK faction.

Just because Firaxis never bothered to officially tell anyone that the logos have changed or because they weren't changed in the Faction section doesn't mean that they haven't changed. I'm sure that Firaxis wants to keep some things a secret, or that they simply don't have much time to devote to changing the site.

I know that they are very busy trying to get the game finished.

DJ RRebel posted 11-25-98 11:57 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for DJ RRebel  Click Here to Email DJ RRebel
yeah, but all this hush-hush top secret stuff is getting a little too rediculous !!!

Honestly, I'm getting a little sick of it all !!!

They really should have a PR rep for a game of that size !!!

I fear that the game will not be as big as it should because of the lack of interest !!!

As forum members, we are 100% target market, what's more, the more info they give us, the more lickely we are to get our friends to come here !!!

Right now, I wouldn't recommend the game to any of my friends, even if in my heart, I know it will be the best game ever !!!

I couldn't really find the old Morgan logo but the new one sure is ugly! The only word that properly describes it's: Squat.
I really like the Peacekeeping logo as well as the UoP. And I can't really see the hammer and sicle, more like a cresent moon with a chip off and the wheel of a ship, but the old logo did have a wrench as some recommended and it sucks.
The cool thing about the Human Hive logo is the way everything is locked in place, completely fitting.

Oh and it would be cool if Deidre's logo was round instead rectangular.

DJ RRebel :

I'm not sure about the proper spelling, but the correct pronounciation is
Z-a-h-a-r-o-v, with "h" like in Hamilton.
Trust me. My high-school sweetheart was Zakharova (feminine form of Zakharov)
Should it be Zakharov or Zaharov, I don't know. But surely it is not Zakarov.

Regarding UoP logo, I don't think it is really a sickle. If it is, I strongly object. Hammer&sickle symbolized the workers and farmers - the only two official classes in USSR. Zakharov and another "mind-working people" did not fit in either one and were classified as an intelegencia. I really doubt that any intelegent (it is a noun, not adjective in russian and means a person belonging to intelegencia) would use a symbol he/she despises. At least I won't.

Oleg
