Well, we had "Thread of the Year" in the old forums, and now with the year winding up, I'm suggesting SMACer of the year. Who's contributed most to the boards? Who knows the most about SMAC? Who do we all like? Nominate two people and explain why. No fair nominating yourself. Only nominate someone once. So don't nominate someone who has already been nominated.

I nominate Thomas A. Stobie and Yo_Yo_Yo_Hey. They've both spoken much about SMAC and other topics, they fought on opposite sides of a civil war, leading their respective sides, and they didn't run off and abandon us in the name of something as foolish as love(Greg...).

Larry Boy posted 11-19-98 08:01 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Larry Boy  Click Here to Email Larry Boy
I'm gonna have to give up a nomination for good 'ol Brother Greg. He compiled all that info for us on SMAC, good job Greggy. Plus, he contributes to a truckload of forums, even the wacked out off topic ones that I like. (-8 And hey, lemme also give up a round of applause for Stobie and YYYH *CLAP CLAP CLAP!* Good job guyz!
Apocalypse posted 11-19-98 08:36 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Apocalypse  Click Here to Email Apocalypse
Strange YYYH, the person who started the totally non-SMAC topics, was nominated because he has spoken a lot about SMAC

I nominate Irman because he has been around since June and is still a regular poster.

Well he did say about SMAC & *other stuff*. Pretty much the other stuff, but I speak a little about SMAC, not much for me to say about it though.

As always, I'm flattered by your nomination of me Au, & thanks for the applause Larry Boy.

Your faithful & hell-bent NIMadier general,
YYYH

I'll second TAS as best SMACER.

Maybe we should have two categories, best on-topic and best general. TAS would probably be a lock for best on-topic, and there would be quite a fight for the best "General Stuff" poster that includes everything.

I'd have to say that Stobie would be the poster of the year. To bad all of the info he posted is lost.

Although I like Thomas (why is that hard to believe), I'm going with YYYH on this one. Sure he's been off-topic, but that's what this board has been. That's what pulled together a community.

I think they're just after nominations here, not voting yet. That'll come later. So, just nominate people, don't get into discussions (yet) about the relevant merits of those same people.

I nominate MikeH and jsorense.

I'll have to go with nominating Brother Greg for being such a valuable member of the boards (and he did return to us eventually guys...) and Brenda for her insightful posts and all that work she put into modeling the Alpha Centauri system in POVRay.

Actually, I would like to nominate Maya as well, for her informative posts, and the fact that she rarely (if ever) flames anyone. Sarcasm, yes, flames, no. Sounds like the sorta girl I shoulda met back in High School.

Hmm, can you nominate three people?

Here are a couple of old timers for you, Venom and Jason Beaudoin.

May I also suggest instead of having just one category, SMACer of the year, how about many categories. Such as:

Lurker of the year
Club of the year
The Centurian Award (person who has done the most for the advancement of SMAC)
The Alpha Award
Spartan of the year
Morganite of the year
Peacekeeper of the year
(and so on w/the factions)

Best SMACer
SMACer you would love to Smac
and any other categories that we could come up with

We could set up one person as the vote counter/announcer. Votes could be sent via E-mail (secret ballot) one vote per category and around mid December we could have the First Annual SMAC Awards. We could e-mail certificates to the winners. This might help the time till Dec pass quicker. How's that for an idea....... or should I shut up?

I say we use your categories. Any more will be too complicated. Set up a thread for each one. One at a time. Leave them for a day then tally up the results.
dushan posted 11-20-98 10:40 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for dushan  Click Here to Email dushan
Don't you think it would be better to do it by email (as suggested originally?)

As to the list of categories, how on Earth are we going to find the best lurker? :-)

I think before anything else goes ahead, we should finalise the categories. If no one has anything to add after a day, then we post a thread with the categories, rules and the email of the organiser (I don't think I qualify for any of the categories, so if no one else wants to do this & we agree on the email vote, I volunteer to count it).

Please don't start the category threads just yet, there might be better suggestions no one has thought of yet, and some are a bit doubtful (sorry WAS ). I think 7 is a good SMACish number so if we can get the no. of categories down to that...

If you are going to vote on best Hiver, Morganite, etc., would the voting be open to everybody, or would only other Hivers, Morganites, etc. be allowed to vote on their own factional favorites?
If you are going to vote on most posts, are you going to disregard double posts and nexus spamming?
What about grey areas between on-topic and off-topic posts (e.g. I thought atheism vs. theism was off-topic until Miriam and Saratov, uh, Zakharov, got into it)?
dushan posted 11-20-98 12:43 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for dushan  Click Here to Email dushan
We can either take number of posts from profiles, but that's not a vote.

If we'll vote, than people will vote for the person with the strongest presence. That will obviously exclude double posting and such.

I think we're talking here about who made the biggest impression on the people, not simple statistics.

For SMACer of the year I would nominate Brother Greg and Thomas A. Stobie,. I would also give honorable mention to The DirectorGeneral, MikeH, Roland, and Brenda.

BTW, thanks Greg. I didn't think anyone noticed me here.

I agree with dushan, lets not get down to actual numbers, but more who has contributed the most.

As to the doubtfullness of some (or all) of my categories, I was just tring to plant the idea. I agree it would be tough to determine the Best Lurker, but other people might have some good nominations. I think it would be more of an actual "election" (which is what the Oscars& the Emmies are) if the ballot was secret.

If dushan wants to run with this, I say Let the SMAC Awards begin!

dushan posted 11-20-98 01:25 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for dushan  Click Here to Email dushan
Ok. As I said, let's leave this thread for a while for people to suggest new categories.

What we can do next is create a thread with a numbered list of ALL the suggested categories. Anyone who has a nomination for some category states it with the nomination's number in that thread. Categories that will have less then say 3 nominations fall out

After that step I'll create a summarising thread, with all the nominees & my email address. Then we'll just sit & wait and after a couple of days I'll post the results.

SO: All the suggested categories are going ahead, if they'll have enough nominations.

I need some confirmation of this from at least a couple of you guys so that I'm not wasting my time with something nobody wants.

Also, I need you to ok the minimum number of nominees for a category to go ahead (currently 3) and the time allowed for voting to go on (3 days? Week? Or wait for at least N votes?)

Ok guys, it's almost bed time here in uk, I'm leaving this thread here for you to suggest any additional categories.

As I had no confirmation or oposition to my suggestions, unless someones objects by tomorrow (21/11) 12:00 GMT I will take all the suggested categories from this thread and start a new nomination thread.

Please don't nominate in this thread as we need category related nominations.

WAS-yep, you're right. I also thought about some nice way of releasing the results (if we ever get to that stage), and we probably need someone with style, wit and charm (like Maya :-)) who would have time to write an interesting post with the results.

However my worry is that if we spend ages discussing everything we won't be done before the demo comes out. No one objected to the first phase, so let's go ahead and while the votes are collected we can discuss the finale.

So the deadline for categories is set (though I think we have enough), tomorrow you can start nominating.

If that's a tad, um, harsh, than I suggest everyone's two favorite conservatives to get some moderate conservatives (YYYH?) to vote for who the better one is among them.

I'd like to propose the "best tagline" category, and nominate the DirectorGeneral ("from the desk of the DirectorGeneral"). Honorable mention to DCA for always coming up with something new and amusing.

Perhaps the "Best non-SMAC thread" category should be split, so that threads like the Atheism/Religion threads aren't competing with the less serious threads.

All of my other nominations have already been made by other people, so I won't bother seconding them.

I argue their points, and wrote for them in the RCFH, and agree with many of their philosophies, I'm more of an undecided. Still, since there isn't much competition, I'd be happy to take the best Gaian trophy of voting ever starts. Some nominations of mine (no bias here):

Best impersonation of Sid Meier in a rival forum: SnowFire
Best oxymoronic name: SnowFire
Best namer of the I Club XI: SnowFire
Best God that transcended on the new boards: SnowFire

I second DCA's best tagline nomination, and Imran's "most people ticked off" nomination. After all, he kept on trying to kill my Order of the Violet Shroud! But each time he wrote of its death, I wrote of its escape! Muahaha, I wouldn't be subverted by the tricks he used to kill Morgan.

If I recall correctly, I first started seeing Brother Greg posting on the old Friaxis Games "General Comments" forum about a year ago (please correct me if I am wrong, Greg). There were discussions and speculations about SMAC and what kind of features it should include. This discussion continued in earnest when Firaxis began a separate A.C. forum where many aspects of game play and the manual were discussed and debated. I do not recall seeing any of the other posters you mention on either of those forums. However, I could be wrong and they may have also been lurkers there.

Let's see...

Jsorense: "I would also give honorable mention to The DirectorGeneral, MikeH, Roland, and Brenda."

Arnelos: "Peacekeeper of the year: Brother Greg, although I should nominate RyanR, Roland."

What ? Just one nomination and one honarary mention ? With my number of posts ? So I gotta make my own categories...

1. Worst nr of posts/impact ratio (obviously - anyone want to compete ?)

2. Most forgotten fossile (hey, I was there way back discussing beer with brother Greg)

3. Best assimilation (I should be the only one in this category)

4. Best non-native-english-speaker poet (again the only one, I think)

5. Best Austrian (again the only one)

6. Inventer of most useless SMAC awards categories.

Hey, when will the "serious" categories be defined (for more serious nominations...) ???

Ah yes, one suggestion: best allround-poster ?

Actually, WAS, the reason it seams I have so many, is because for some reason or another, I've noticed my threads have been more agresively targeted by the evil nexii !!!

I don't know why ???
I htink most of my threads are at least interesting !!!

I've started many off-topic threads, but most if not all of them have been relavant to our lil community here !!! I've also started many on-topic threads too, I think it's important to keep a proper balance !!!

It would also seem ogical that the person who has the most threads also has the most posts .. (At least since the great wa-bang) !!!

Anyways .. I hope you all enjoy my topics, and find them at least intellectually stimulating if you don't agree with them !!!

OK .. enough of the moshy stuff !!!

We need to vote on which categories will actually be voted on. Here are the proposed categories that I have seen:

(apologies to any I've missed. I've tried to include only categories people thought should ACTUALLY be categories, not just jokes).

SMACer of the Year
Club of the year
The Centurian Award (person who has done the most for the advancement of SMAC)
The Alpha Award

What now? Here's what I propose: We should vote on whether or not each of these categories should be kept. A nomination into any one of these categories is considered a vote for that category, unless you say otherwise. If you feel a category should not exist, post and say so. If you have no opinion, don't choose arbitrarily. I'm believe that some of thse will drop off the map by people voting "I don't like that category". If there are still too many after that we will narrow it down to only the more popular categories.

[this is still just my proposal] After a few days of this, we will have determined which categories are to actually be voted on. At that time, I (or anyone else who cares) will start a thread with a title that is the name of the category. This thread will be open for any "speeches" in support or opposition. I also think that voting could go on in these threads. I don't think a secret ballot is really necessary, since I don't think anyone will take real offense at being voted against.

I think that once we narrow the categories down to about 20 or so, voting can begin.

Here are my award preferences (for the awards themselves, not who should get them!):

Awards I like:
SMACer of the Year
______ of the Year (for each faction)
Defender of the Faith Award (but only if it goes across faction lines -- I don't think there should be seven categories)
Best Tagline

Awards I dislike:
The Centurian Award (redundant w/ SMACer of the Year)
The Alpha Award (ditto)
Most Posts (we all more or less know, so there's no point in voting)
Best SMACer (again, redundant)
SMACer you'd love to Smack (why dredge up bad memories?)
Most Offensive _____ (ditto)
Most Conciliatory ______ (doesn't make much sense without the corresponding Offensive category)

I am neutral on the others.

Why are you guys rushing things so fast ???

Personally, I think we should keep every category so far, even the joke ones !!!

I also think the nominations should go straight through till Dec 19th !!!

Then we can slowly vote between the demo and the full release !!!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm having fun with thinking of new catagories for now ... what's the rush anyways ???

I also take somewhat offence to the "american/non-american" catagories .. there were many nominations for other countries too ... you can't just put the whole rest of the world in one catagory !!!

I'd also like to nominate myself for a new catagory: SMACer most inclined to use a custom faction & SMACer responsible for making people think beyond the 7 basic factions !!!

Anyways, that's just my opinion ... we should take our time with this !!! It's fun !!!

I'll try to keep track of everything (and post it at members.aol.com/arnelos/smacer.html). I'd be more than willing to handle votes, but if dushan wants it, I'm more than willing to let him (as long as votes take place before December 19th I'm fine with it. If it's after December 19th. . .well, I may be a bit distracted, maybe dushan could do it)

If we keep coming up with categories it is going to get ridiculous. I think we should narrow things down to around ten or so (although just freezing the current awards list would be acceptable to me), and then people should just put some thought into it. I think that the awards would be a lot more meaningful if people knew that they won them because their fellow SMACers respected them and their posts, not because somebody had crafted an award that only they could win. Do I hear any nominations for the "best username that reminds you of a sea creature" award?

DJ RRebel: I'm in no rush, but it seems like a lot of people want to move on to the voting, and very few new nominations for old categories are coming in. I think that things will go a lot more smoothly if somebody tries to impose a little order on this since the thread is kind of hard to follow, which is what I tried to begin, and what Arnelos has continued admirably. Good job, Arnelos!

I still say that an e-mail vote is not necessary. If we just post our votes in a thread, then nobody will be swamped with work. If Arnelos and dushan want to fight over the extra workload, though, I guess that's their business .

Imran Siddiqui posted 11-28-98 03:34 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Imran Siddiqui  Click Here to Email Imran Siddiqui
I disagree on some of the nominations as stated by Arnelos. For The Alpha Award, most ancient, YYYH should not be added since he came later than most of the 1st generation veterns. He was a July kid, I came in in June. Also, Brian Reynolds Baises Ruthless/Idealistic is an on-topic thread not an off-topic. It dealt with the labeling of beliefs in the game. Also, I refuse to be nominated in catagories with Red Dog and Domk. They pissed me off!! So they win! I will not be associated with their kind! That is all.

All I did was look at every single nomination that I could find on the entire thread for the awards that were listed.

So YYYH is on there because someone actually nominated him. I did notice your post Imran about when YYYH came, but YYYH hasn't responded at all. So I just threw it in there (I figure he wouln't win a vote if he wasn't really first, so who cares?)

As for e-mail voting, well, it would be useful. It would make this whole thing a whole lot easier to handle. I decided to list what had been nominated just for my own records, I decided to post it for mutual benifit. The thread is starting to get REAL LONG and I didn't want to have to remember what all had been posted (or sift through the entire thread).

So, doesn't matter to me, I just built the list for the purpose of having SOMETHING to look at for an overall list.

I agree with you Imran that Red Dog and Domk deserve those awards and putting on there with them could possibly be construed as an insult to you.

I think email would be better. Otherwise we'd have people posting running counts and the like. Plus it would be pretty hard to close the thread after all the posts were counted. People'd be posting in it after we posted results, etc.

"People'd be posting in it after we posted results, etc."

Well, the flip-side to that is that nobody will feel left out if they miss any deadlines. If one person is named as the sole "vote tallying guy", (I wouldn't mind doing it, but I don't really care who does it) then the clutter and distraction could be kept to a minimum.

"But I'll go with the flow..."

I do like the email thing. However, we'd need someone, who will remove himself or herself from any awards, just to be fair I think. Or, you can have two judges. Both verify, so their won't be cheating. So sue me, I'm a pessimist and pragmatist.

The only reasons I can think of for having a secret (e-mail) ballot is so that either 1) nobody knows who you voted for, or 2) you don't know who voted for or against you (or a combination). Personally, I don't see why either of those matter for these awards (but feel free to disagree). The big advantage of voting within the forums are that there cannot be any fraud (unless someone registers twice, and that ought to be mighty suspicious, since somebody who had never posted before would be voting, and would never post again). In addition, nobody is singled out to do extra work (I imagine it might get difficult to sort through all of the e-mail and properly categorize it). The second advantage is probably the more compelling, since anyone who would organize some sort of voting fraud over the SMACer of the year award probably needs some medical help .

The primary purpose of this post is to keep the thread near the top so that everyone thinks something exciting is happening in here, and voices their opinion.

Arnelos posted 12-02-98 01:10 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Arnelos  Click Here to Email Arnelos
I don't think you have to remove yourself from award taking to count the votes.

Afterall, I'm more than willing to take the *crushing blow* (ok, not really, I could care less whether I get elected as anything) of the votes I have received so far by e-mail.

Yes, people have already started sending e-mail votes to me (even though I only asked for nominations).

I'd like to have nominations for all the things that currently have no nominations. Otherwise, we should just drop those categories (and I agree that there haven't been too many people running about arguing for the Gaian or UofP ideology, but that's sort of sad).

OK, this one has to be answered once and for all:

What nationality is Domk? Someone who knows can save me a whole lot of time and effort by just telling me.

If we can't determine where he's from, there's little point in giving him nominations for BOTH most offensive American AND most offensive non-American.

(BTW, for those of you who asked why only one category existed for each: I will admit as an American that the number of offensive people on the sight is disproportionally slanted toward the United States and the Kingdom of Sweden, with the notable exceptions of lx from Belgium and perhaps CrackGenius from Britain, not to mention a few others. Overall though, there are so many Americans that are disproportionaly offensive to non-Americans than the opposite, that I think even the non-Americans can agree to spliting those two awards in that fashion. Sorry to my fellow Americans if you are offended. )

I think an email ballot would add a little intrigue and suspense to the whole thing. If it gets posted on the BB people will tend to vote for who is leading. Also if someone goes to the voting thread and sees the person that they were going to vote for has no chance of winning, then maybe they won't cast their vote at all. On an email vote you don't know how your choice is doing until it is announced. I say email.
Dushan has volunteered to cout votes.

Definately agreed.

Of course, that means the person collecting votes (perhaps myself) should vote first for this reason. I will do so now before too many votes come in.

Alright, I submit to the tyranny of the majority and accept an e-mail vote (in fact, I just mailed it to Arnelos while it's fresh in my mind). I think Arnelos is now our de facto judge. If you're willing to accept a piece of advice, Arnelos, I'd suggest setting up some sort of template on your web page that is easy to cut and paste into an e-mail to make it easier on people. The nomination list sort of does that, but it is a little bit too big and unwieldy.

Of course, updates to vote count might be posted well after the initial post.

Man, I'd also like to nominate the "Amen Brother Greg" thread for best off topic thread. I can't believe it didn't get a mention.

And the "Estimates for the Unity" (or whatever it was called) thread for best on topic.

Brother Greg.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Greg, but isn't "The fusion efficiency thread" already nominated for best OFF-topic thread? It seems like it was nominated by Spoe, but the post where he did it is a bit confusing:

"Best On-Topic Thread: ... The fusion efficiency thread ... (Ok, so [this is] somewhat on topic."

It's not clear to me whether Spoe meant this for on-topic or off-topic (one of those "on"s should probably be an "off"). We should resolve this, so Arnelos doesn't have another Domk-esque fiasco on his hands . I think it was on-topic, but sort of a gray area.

Were they the same threads? I dunno, anyway, I reckon it should be in the On-topic if it is the same thread. It was about as on-topic as you'd get here.

Brother Greg.

Roland: HEY: I'm Austrian, as well!!!

Well, now you mention it, I was born in Sweden, I've lived here all my life, my mother's Finnish, my father's part of a Croatian minority group in Austria... I guess you beat me hands down to the title of Best Austrian... But I've an Austrian passport! And we've (the family in Burgenland, Austria, that is) lived in the same village since the late 15th Century... Ah, well, can't win 'em all...

tOFfGI: Har har!!! Most Swedish!!! Tell that one to the boys in black/brown with swastikas and (extremely) short hair!!! Hardehardehirrrhirrrhirrrr >>COUGH*COUGH*COUGH!!!<<

Sorry about that. But, see, I've an Austrian passport, etc. (see above). I find this most enjoyable! Aaahh, nothing like a good, cleansing laugh.

But hey! thanks for the nomination!

Jeje!: Even more thanks to you! Kiitos paljon!!!

Roland: Don't remind me. I was delusional at the time... Hmmm... Suddenly it strikes me that you have shown a great affinity for Bavaria... Would you please explain...?

I might be lenient toward these treasonous tendencies, if you assure me (preferably prove it in writing, with extensive documentation) that it's all part of a plan to extend the domains of the Austrian empire to include parts of the world that are rightfully a part of Austria. We can start with Bavaria, but I feel we should extend our goals to include other natural parts of Austria, such as Tyrolia (the parts the (nowadays nice (?)) Italians snuck out from under our feet), Hungary, and Slovenia.

After a short pause, to show the repatriated Austrians how nice it is to be part of the Empire, we can expand some more.

Maybe I should add some information about the "niceness"? I was a bit surprised when my father told me that German was not the teaching language used the first three years when he went to school in Austria. They used Serbo-Croatian, since that was the mother tongue of practically everyone in the village where he grew up (and he was born in 1939!!!). This is a nice way of treating minorities!!! Furthermore, it's a way, that does not in any way impinge negatively on the understanding of German, as it turns out!!!

Interesting, or what?!??!

Back to the plans for expansion: OK, when we've demonstrated how much better everyone is off, when they join us, we'll take over all of former Yugoslavia (and Albania, as well, since they seem to have trouble there, too). After we've shown the rest of the EU what good guys we are, we'll let them become a part of the Empire, as well.

I wonder when we should stop...

So, Roland, please don't tell me you have a different agenda.

I have a potential stopping point: when we incorporate Australia. It'll be a lot easier then - we don't have to think "'Aussies', could they mean us?".

Or don't we want to be able to call ourselves Aussies?

Roland posted 12-03-98 08:02 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Roland  Click Here to Email Roland
The plans are pretty simple.

Today the refrigarator, tomorrow the world...oops, that was something else...

The plan for SMAB (Sid Meiers AustroBavaria):

Ok, first, we exclude Vienna. We seize it to Ucraine or Belarus. After Bavaria separates from germany, we unite with Bavaria. We buy southern Tyrol from Italy. This gives us a basis of 18 million people with a strong position in the world beer market. Then, we form OBEC (Organisation of beer exporting countries). OBEC members will steadily accept the austrobavarian way of life (beer gardens and Gemtlichkeit). By control of the world beer market, OBEC will slowly assimilate the rest of the world and send a brewery to AC. On earth, we design a game called SimBrewery. Australia will be part of OBEC, I think, and therefore be in the first stage of assimilation. Aussie is a fine term.

The US will try to stop us, but OBEC will make sure they are dead drunk. This should only take 1 % of our overall production, so we can support the process by massive price reductions.

I think we should make it a TOP priority to incorporate (glug-glug, mmmm, schmatz!) Tschechia and Slovakia. With their beers, we'll be almost unbeatable.

I guess Britain and Ireland might prove tough, but we do have contacts there, so it should be possible to convince them of where their loyalties should lie.

What do you think about the Belgian problem? Peach beer? Kriek (or whatever the cherry version is called)? Should they be allowed to join, or should we just *accidentally* press some button and leave a crater or three smoking...?

By the way, Imran, if I wasn't such a nice guy, I'd have renominated you as most offensive American. I read your apology in the A-hole thread, and it's fine you apologized at all, but you didn't go into much detail, and compared to the amount of abuse you threw around, it wasn't that impressive an apology - but I guess _with_ exactly that much abuse floating around, it would be hard to be as specific in your apology... ;p

Hrm. Can I join OBEC? I know I'm not exactly a country, but I do make my own beer. It'd be nice to live in a world ruled by the beer concerns. Oh, and about the Belgians -- I can think of worse threats than Kriek. How about Zima? Or Milwaukee's Best? There you're getting into the true anti-beer beverages.

OK, despite the University of Arizona's network having been down for the past 2 days, I'm back!

I can if you all want, start a new thread to host this topic and the current list of nominees. I was particularly surprised that I didn't get any e-mail during this time (since aparently the server was accepting e-mail, just not delivering it) from you all concerning your SMACer votes.

If no one else is going to vote, I'll go ahead and post the results. (the turnout was less than 10. . .).

If ANYONE else wants to vote, do so and I will not post the results yet.

NOW, off to form a new thread for this. . .
