Roland, you're right on the land bridge.

And one of your guesses was right - AC/DC.

Tolls, yep, San Fran. Wrong on the happy bit tho. Bit of a play on words by me there (explain below).

Spoe, yes, and yes. Ayer's rock is the largest above ground "rock" or monolith known to the world. And a "blue" or a "stink" is indeed a fight.

Anyway, the answers (in full):

1. Captain Arthur Phillip.

2. Because they are the only two land based animals in Australia (I think it is the world actually) that are unable to walk backwards.

3. The great barrier reef is the largest corral reef in the world.

4. Ayers Rock is the largest known above ground rock, or monolith int he world.

5. (Damn, I was hoping someone could answer this, my memory's a bit vague on the names). The then governor general, sir Ninian Stephens, dismissed the government of Gough Whitlam, and Robert Menzies made that famous statement. In Australia, the Queen of England is the nominal head of state, and the Gov General her representative. One of the arguments for a Republic involve the Queen not being our ruler.

6. Harold Holt was an Australian Prime Minister. One day he went swimming at a beach in Victoria (Bell's, I think), when he disappeared. To "Do the Harold Holt" is Australian Rhyming Slang for "to do the bolt", in reference to Mr Holt. Australian Rhyming Slang is when we refer to things by words that rhyme with them. Like Rubber Duck is a truck. A Barry Crocker is a shocker.

7. General Douglas MacArthur. Can't believe none of the Americans got this one.

8. AC/DC

9. Craig Johnson. He won the FA cup with Liverpool.

10. Via he land bridge from Asia, thousands of years ago.

11. Brolly is slang for an umbrella.

12. Sheila is slang for a woman. A man is a "bloke".

13. Australia has a beer called "XXXX", pronounced Fourex. In America, Fourex (or something that sounds the same is a brand of condom. The theme song for the beer in Australia is "I can feel a fourex coming on". Rather ammusing, and a little shocking at first for our American friends when they first hear it.

14. A "blue" or a "stink" is slang for a fight.

15. King's Cross was originally called Queen's Cross. Which is rather ammusing, as it is now the home of Sydney's gay and lesbian communities, and our sex industry in Sydney (the place all the US sailors go when the ships come in ).

16. San Francisco.

17. They're both so "Happy" because they are the two cities with the largest gay and lesbian communities in the world. Bit of a play on words, in that "Gay" really means to be happy.

So, there you go, a little knowledge about Australia. If you want to know about our political system, go see the "Questions for Brother Greg" thread, where a few people wanted to know about our government and stuff.

I'll come up with some more later if anyone is interested.

"behind the eight-ball" means to be in a tough position. Comes from the difficult situation of having one of your balls(no, no, get your minds out of the gutter) between the eight-ball and a pocket(the idea being to only sink the eight-ball _after_ all of your own) in pool.

7. Who was commander in chief of the Australian forces in the Pacific during WWII?

13. What Australian beer brand has a rather unfortunate (humerous) song to an American?
14. What is a "blue"?
