Damn, so they did rename him. How annoying. I thought Saratov is pretty acceptable Russian name :-)

Anyone else is disappointed?

I don't really mind... If SMAC is as customizable as CivII was, i'll just change his name back to Sartov when i but the game.. just like I'll switch Yang's names around, for the chinese "family name - given name" order I like.

This is why these games are cool.

Good point, I forgot that arrangement of names. We should start a reform movement.

Although, It is a UN mission so maybe Yang had to be westernized just to get on board.

Who says its official? I like Saratov better, and with any luck it will stay that way.

P.S. Let's not forget that even Saratov didn't use to be Saratov, he used to be Sorov.

Firaxis say it's official :-(

I read it. Who says they can't change it again?

It's a U.N. mission, remember? These people didn't have to get their names screwed up by the immigration officers at Ellis Island in the 1920s like alot of other imigrants to the United States. These people aren't even immigrating to the U.S., they're leaving the planet entirely on a U.N. supported and funded mission. The U.N. doesn't anglicize (many citizens of non former British colonies in the developing world would say "corrupt") the names of Russians, Chinese, and Indians for the mission.

So Zakharov is just fine. Saratov was an anglicized interpretation of a "Russian-sounding" name. Zakharov is more Russian. If anything, it removes Zakharov from the sterio-typical Russian to being a "real" Russian.

I support it.

They did it because of comments made by the Russian posters on this forum. I think it's great.

I guess so. I was just getting used to Saratov, Zakjarov sounded rather alien in the last episode.

But don't worry, I'll get over it.
I'm also glad that Firaxis react our feedback, I just didn't want to complain about the delay of the demo, so I picked on this

Oops, I meant Zakharov!

I applaud firaxis for their thouroughness, and I hope they keep it up. As many have said, this is a more accurate name.

Damn, this name is too hard for me to pronounce, now. Oh well, I'll get used to it, I always do.

I'm glad FIRAXIS cares about accuracy. If anyone pays attention to the profiles, they changed Saratovs(Ill say that for now) & Lals. Someone complained that Lal had been to WEST Germany, in 2006. There is no West Germany anymore, so FIRAXIS changed it to Germany, without mentioning it. Then in Saratovs profile, it said he was educated at the University of Leningrad, there is no more Leningrad, & I just noticed they changed it back to St. Petersburg. Thanks for noticing it FIRAXIS.

I think that they should keep Zhakarov for the same reasons you guys do. If I know that Saratov is not a probable name, then why would I change it back to Saratov in the game?

And I'm glad most of all, because it was ME, who say, that it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to russian have a name, which equal to some city name (Saratov - it is city in Russian Europe). I am very glad, that Firaxis have reading this forum and even use some ideas. Zakharov is a good, standard russian surname. And if it hard for you to pronounce it, think about Khrustchev, or Scheglovich - and we have some letters which can NOT be simulated by english letters in any combination...

I concur, Saratov as a name sounds plain silly. It is a city, damn it ! While Zakharov is perfectly all right.

I support the name change as well. In English terms, I guess it would sound silly to have a character named "Chicago" Is that what it sounded like? Anyway, I liked Saratov, so I'll probably just change it back later when I get it

I don't see how this could even possibly be an issue. So, they changed the name from Saratov (which is bad Russian) to Zakharov (which is good Russian). Fine. Why should this disappoint anyone?

Saratov is the hometown of the my most hated basketball team, Avtodor. Zalgiris is going to kick the asses of these money-laundering wussies on thursday in Kaunas. ZALGIRIS FOR EUROCHAMPS!!!

Zakharov? Zakharov? ZAKHAROV? ZAKHA-rov? Zakha-ROV? Zakha-Bleeding-rov? What kind of stupid name is that?

How do you pronounce "kh" anyway? I vote for Saratov.

Those Russian alphabeths keep confusing me. Not that I would understand any of them, but the way they are traslated. For instance Boris Yeltsin is Boris Jeltsin in Finland due to different pronounciacion. And Yeltsin is just an easy name. How would a Russian write it, with a J or a Y?

For some reason, I'm reminded of a quote from Romeo and Juliet. I think you know which one I mean...

Simply try to understand - we have alphabet that differ from english VERY much. It is almost impossible to translate adequate our names in english. Take Yeltsin for example. The first vowel is a 'ringing e', where e is like in s'e'tting, but more harsh and short. How you'll simulate it? And 'ts' - is attempt to simulate our consonant which remind 'c' in 'c'incinatty. 'Kh' in Zakharov is almost equal to 'h' in 'h'abit, (and, btw, both 'a' - is like 'u' in c'u'p ). And last 'v' is very hard - I don't know english words, which ends with it analog. Btw, Zakhar - is some kin to your Zacharia...

I'm guessing that future names on Earth will become less and less ethnicly based !!!

Just my opinion !!!

But DJ, last names will always be ethnically based, since they have been throughout time.

Great ! I always been a big Sabonis fan.
Even when Zhalgiris played against Stroitel Kuybyshev - my home town team. Very glad for him.
BTW, what happened to Marchulenis ? It is difficult to keep touch with europian affairs here, in Texas.
