Anyone know if there will be specialized attack modes, ala MAX? That is, certain units will be able to only attack aircraft and no other units? Or able to attack only sea units and nothing else? If so, I can FINALLY delete that <expletive deleted> buggy game from my hard drive...

Seriously, that is one thing I always thought lacking in Civ and CivII. No matter what, you always ended up building two or three units only, neglecting all else. Who here, after having developed Mech Inf and Artillery, ever used anything else when attacking the enemy? But if you tried something like that in MAX, you'd get wasted. I would love to see combined-arms strategies in SMAC.

On the same topic, will there be ranged attacks? Even adjacent/1 hex/2 hexes will give some realism. Who, for example, would believe that an infantry unit could shoot the same distance as a missile unit?

Just a thought. Not even going to ask for line-of-sight.

Wonderful ideas, especially ranged attack; I've been hoping for that for a long time.

I've read somewhere that there will be range attacks, though you'll only inflict limited damage (so you won't be able to completely wipe out the attacking army with your artillery). If the stack that is being attacked also contains a ranged unit, they will fight it out till death. This sounds very promising, doesn't it?

Yeah, I agree that the design of units should ensure that you don't end up with a couple of super-units. Remember though that in SMAC you'll be designing your own units, so I hope the unit components will be so balanced that there'll be more than just a few 'right' combinations.

Yes, you can design your own units, but what's to prevent the "Battle of the Titans"? If any ground unit can attack aircraft, and if any naval unit can attack every other naval unit, what's the point of designing multiple units, aside from the cost issue? I personally like the fact that in MAX, you have several units:
Missile crawlers: long range, slow reload, light armored
Assault units: medium range, decent reload, light armored
Tanks: short range, fast reload, heavily armored
Rocket launchers: medium-to-long range, slow reload, light armored, area-effect damage
Anti-aircraft: medium range, slow reload, light armored, can only affect aircraft (but no other ground unit can touch aircraft)

And you get the same level of specialization in naval and air units. So, you see, if you sent out just a bunch of tanks, a ground attack aircraft could wipe them out. Include anti-aircraft units, and the enemy will send out a missile crawler to attack you from a distance. Bunch up your units, and a rocket launcher would affect everything in a three-square area. You've got to use many different abilities in order to hope to survive.

Now, if only Interplay could get rid of the bugs (they're up to v1.4 of MAX2, and they still haven't gotten rid of the single-player custom scenario bug, which causes crashes during the AIs turn somewhere around turn 60)... Oh well, I'm hoping to replace MAX2 with SMAC.
