Due to the crisis in Honduras, I thought I would start an off topic thread on how to help. I received this e-mail message, and they appear to be legitimate. The devastation in unimaginable, and these people are left with virtually nothing.>Hello, > In case you hadn't heard, Catholic Relief Services is taking >donations to alleviate the suffering of the survivors of Hurricane Mitch. >thousands are dead in the Honduras and Nicaragua region, and many more >will die without adequate food, shelter, clothing and medical treatment. >100% of total contributions go to the region. More information is >available at http://www.catholicrelief.org/ or donations can go to: > Catholic Relief Services > P.O. Box 17090 > Baltiore, MD 21203-7090 > >Dial: 1-800-235-2772 >______________________________

DeStrider that is very thoughtful of you. Although you do have to be careful with these legitimate sounding groups. Sometime, they are not legitimate. Still, it's worth the effort to find out.I was down in LA the other day and I saw a group of people collecting for the relief effort (nearly a whole parking lot full of supplies- unfortunatly they didn't have anyway of getting the supplies down there. Maybe the airlines could help out. I think the group was associated with La Curacao. |

BigER;I spent over six years in international disaster assistance and I can say that Catholic Relief Services is a very old and very highly respected organization. I have also spent a couple of years in Honduras and can tell you that the situation there is an utter disaster. Can you imaging a natural disaster hit the US and caused 10,000 deaths? And Honduras has a population of a little over 6 million. It is like they just lost the worse war in their history. It is an unprecedented tragedy for that small poor nation and its citizens. But you are right. There are many organizations that will take advantage of the situation or waste valuable resouces due to lack of experience.

Definetly honorable of you to set up this topic. If I weren't a student, I'd be down there right know doing some mission work. As for other organizations, I don't know, I'll have to do some searching. |

Since we live in such a great society, and are mostly insulated from events like this, I think that the least we can do is donate $10-20. The great thing is that they accept donations via credit cards. Now that is a good idea!God Bless.... |

Easy guys, I was not saying that this org was a scam. I just said to beware of those that are. I have donated time down in LA and money here at home to Mitch relief, so I am right there with you. OK? |
