This, brothers and sisters, is to be the repository for all of the knowledge we have compiled about SMAC. Whether it be through magazines, web sites, or the hallowed forums themselves, if it has been stated somewhere, I want to see it here. However, try not to duplicate TOO much of the FAQ or the story. =)
Each "topic" I will prefix with the title: "A guide to SMAC: [topic name]" for easy reference. If you feel the lack of a topic, feel free to start it. Just try and stick to the same naming conventions...
Hopefully this should be a comprehensive guide to all of the "verified" knowledge that we have. A good guide for newbies, and a good reference for the vets amongst us. Please quote all sources. Note that some information may be old, and out of date, esp from the old forums. Feel free to add any verified facts, no matter how old they may be...
Also note that I don't see this as a place to debate the merits of the knowledge. Please start a new thread if that is your wish. Otherwise, people may have to wade through hundreds of lines to discover something. =)
So, to start off the "Factions" topic, some knowledge on the Peacekeepers:
FACTION: Peacekeeping Forces

Origins:

Were originally known as "The Keepers of Wisdom". This changed fairly shortly (a month or two) after the new Forums on the SMAC site opened. (from personal experience)
Goals:
------
Dedicated to the sharing of knowledge, and the original goals of the UN mission. (from Faction bio)
Leader:

Name: Pravin Lal. Title: Brother Lal. See bio under "Factions". (from Faction bio)
Base Names:

"United Nations Headquarters" (from Faction bio)
"UN Aid Station" (from Gallery screenshot - New Diplomacy)
"UN Education Agency" (from Gallery screenshot - New Base Window)

I have heard rumours that the PK's forces will be available to help enforce peace, or defend against an attacker. No details on the logistics, and I have not seen this confirmed.

Next faction on the block: The Spartans! (this is from an unbiased observer, had to do this one before YYYH or MikeH got to it...)

FACTION: Spartan Federation

Origins:

They've always been the Spartans. But according to their backstory, they were a revolutionary group of survivalists who infaltrated the Unity.
Goals:
------
Dedicated to survival at all costs. Not afraid to use espionage, war, and broken treaties to get it.
Leader:

Name: Corazon Santiago. Title: Colonel Santiago. See bio under "Factions". It should be noticed that she was originally a he, Colonel Ortega.
Base Names:
-----------
"Sparta Command" (from Gallery screenshot - New Diplomacy)
"Blast Rifle Crag" (from "Name those faction bases" thread at old forums)
Misc:

Check out the story for lots more info on the Spartans. MikeH thinks Santiago is pretty, um, never mind. She's listed as a lieutenant in the factions area, but a colonel everywhere else.

I just have a strong hero worship for her and all that leather....
Perhaps she promotes herself when the factions split. That was what I assumed anyway.
