Grrrr .. Please don't mess up this thread ... just read PML's Would you go to Alpha Centauri thread, then post in here !!!

BIGE ... don't do that again ... Nexii's come and go .. the damage isn't always permanent !!! Repeated posts I can handle, but I hate scroling through each line left to right !!! It's such a pain in the @$$ !!!

Anyways, I know you didn't do it on purpose, but just don't do it again !!!

OK ..

Phillipe .. Now that I got that off my chest, I'll let you repeat the question .. actually, I think I'll just go and cut and paste it myself .. or better yet, I'll just type it now !!!

=========================================

2 questions !!!

1> If you were given a letter stating you could go on the Alpha Centauri mission, would you ???

2> What would you bring ???
(It would have to fit in a box 30cm cubed (1 cubic foot)
(It also couldn't be alive)

=================================

1> Personally, I'd probably do it depending on a number of variable factors !!!

2> I'd bring Maya's collection of Quotes to form the basis of the new SMAC bible !!!

Is it now a temporary nexus, or a permanent one.

It was only a temp one, but because he thought it was permanent, BigE NIMed it to death and messed the alignment up !!! The same thing that someone did in the original religion thread !!!

So anyways, what would you do if asked to go to AC ???

Ok, I'd call 911....

Well, I don't think I'd go. Only if our world was NYMed beyond repair and life was miserable. I don't know about the Leon turtle and the boyfriend with the insects, though...

1) It depends on my love ones. If they could join I would go. Otherweise I think i wouldn't go.

(Of course if I'm considered to be a person a value to mission it is different. I mean a specialist whos's knowledge can be cruisal for the success of the project)

2) If I would go, I would take a CD-rom with my photo-collection. (From this mission one doesn't return.)

BigER, I live in grass houses, but I have to object to you NYMing threads!
And what shall we do with a big emergency room ? Treat all the victims of NYM ? This is such a waste of... ehm... yeah, whatever, but it is really, really, bad!

Let's not forget the "A tortoise is on its back in the desert. It desperately wants to get back up but you aren't helping her. Why?

Also, "You boy(girl)friend has a huge butterfly collection with all the materials for killing butterflies. What do you say to them?

Don't ask why PML asked those questions, but there they are...

On second thought, maybe I would go to AC if offered the chance today, after all isn't it every kids dream to go to space? Sure, we'll work hard the first 25 years but m name willl go down in history in a big plaque in AC Square as one of the first batch of colonists!

BigE, even NYMing nexuses is bad, we don't like having to scroll around. But let's not argue about this anymore, we have an unpolluted thread right here for our enjoyment.

If I had a chance to go to AC, I would jump on the occasion. I have always dreamed of going in space and I would love to participate in the development of a new society on a new planet. I would love to participate in a possible terraforming project too, so I could do something for many
persons. But my true dream would be to be able to communicate with a pacific lifeform on AC.

To all of you complaining about the one thread that was in the nexus. GET A LIFE!

I don't tell you what to do. the scrolling
of a few lines past the screen BIG DEAL!

Look at REBs post. He acts like it is a personal affront to him.

If you really want trouble it would be easy to nuke this entire forum. But that's not what I'm about. I "NYMed" one thread because it was in the nexus. Well it came back out. Oh Well. You don't want to argue about it. You just want to whine about then not hear from the person you are ragging on. Tough!

You were wrong to bitch at me. I guess this means I am now unwelcome here, fine.

It was fun while we were able to get along but I guess it's more fun to rag on someone for one post-blowing it out of all proportion. What ever!

later.

BigER, I didnt care at all for the NYMing thing and the scrolling that has resulting from it. And while I dont like when people tells other people things like "dont do that" or "you should not do this" or "dont do it again"...who am I to tell them not to tell those things? It is getting myself in the same bag as them. I agree when you answer to DJ by saying that he should not tell you what to do or not do. But I disagree when you say that you know better because you were here before him.

Dont take those things seriously. It would be sad to lose such a clown like you. ;-)

Just my two cents worth.

Hey, DJRRebel, going to AC would depend on what type of reception I would receive. The harsh terrain, maybe, since I live in the desert, I could live with the arid life, however, the no atmosphere would get tough. I hate having to remember to put on a jacket, let alone a helmet, oxygen tank, etc.

Also, I would think the Earth scientists would have sent probes, etc, to AC to get a sense as to what Chiron is like. If I could get all the important things to AC for a long survival, and didn't have to fly with all the warped leaders of the seven factions, it may be ok. I don't know if I would go. I might do like YYYH and just go nuclear with everyone else. Good thread.

DJR Rebel: What personal items would you deem necessary to bring that the ship would provide or the new lifestyle on the planet develope?

And, what political faction would definately stay away from at all costs?

Finally, what would you do: choice; join some faction or stay away from them all? I might be in favor of starting an independent conglomeration faction with all the discontents from all the factions. I don't know, but what would you do?

I would go earth is nice and all but it is infested with politicians and lawyers (do we get to leave them behind? if not only take a few and keep them from breeding.) Of course if the controll software for our craft was written by MS I will stay here.

Hmm what to take, photos of everyone I love who I leave behind, 5 best computer games made before we shipped out, 2 Knives, a pistol (caliber would depend on how much space was left) and fill the rest with loose ammo.

Philippe Mipz Lepage,Just so it is clear I never said I knew "better" I was just trying to explain to the newbie "RREB" that I have seen this all before, that is before he started posting. He was acting like I didn't know any better or that I needed instruction from him. I would not intentionally flame a thread I olny "NYMed" that one because it looked to me like it was in the Nexus-that is, not everyone knows how to get into those. And nexus crallers are much more tolerent of stuff like that. and many many times I have seen gratuitus things go on in nexii threads (much worse then what I did.) So, although it was not intentional, it was also not that big a deal-personally I am much much more offended by threads about the abortion issue then having to scroll a little to see the whole text. I just want RREb to understand that he was offensive and I hope that when I call him a newbie and he gets riled up-to stop and think-it's not any different then what he was doing. So, enough.
Stop bitching. Lets keep these forums civil please-I can be just as nasty as anyone else when told what to do. But I will never START offensive behavour.

BigE .. sorry if you got the impression that I wanted you dead or something .. lol !!!

I was upset at the whole situation .. I only have a 13" monitor, and 1/3rd of it gets eaten up by my ICQ bar etc !!!

I was frustrated with the situation because I have saved nexiied threads before, Iand I knew that they can be saved instead of destroyed .. I just thought that you would have known that judging by the fact that you are not a "newbie" !!!

If you would have taken the time to read all of my original post, you would have seen the words >>> "I know you didn't do it on purpose"
I put those words for you to understand I wasn't upset with you in particular, but I was upset with the situation you had created .. there is a big difference in the two !!!

Anyways, I'm still not upset with you for doing it ... I never was upset with you personally .. (although I will be next time if you do it again even now that you know better .. lol .. but I'm sure that wont happen !!!)

As for my side, I guess I should have expressed my points a little clearer .. I'm guessing my frowny face in the orriginal post could easily have been taken as a me frowning at you, when I was frowning on the situation !!!

So anyways, I am sorry if you missunderstood me, I should have expressed myself a little clearer .. I guess I was just all caught up in the frustration of having to scroll through each line !!!

LOL .. and I didn't take it as a personnal afront ... you must really not think much of me to think that !!! Calling me a newbie and all, I've been here 4-5 months now ... I don't think that qualifies me as a newbie !!! lol .. but who am I to argue with you .. I honestly don't see the difference between a newbie and a vet if their heart is in the right place !!!

I could go on and on ... rubbing in that I actually have the most posts in this new forum (373 .. ahead of YYYH's 350) .. but who really cares .. the number is just a number ... and time is meaningless unless you use it to your advantage !!!

OK .. so anyways .. I know you aren't some A-Hole with a bone to pick with me, you're probably upset with me out of frustration of thinking I was acusing you .. I guess looking back at my thread, I could have (should have) .. reworded things clearer so as not to offend you !!!

So you misunderstood me because I didn't express myself properly .. I guess I had all your vebal attacks comming for me !!!

So anyways, seeing as how we both see no point in this and that we both misunderstood each other, I extend my hand to you and offer a cease fire to a truly pointless argument that never should have started in the first place .. lol !!!

lol .. rereading my thread, I don't think I actually appoligised ... suprising since it was a superlong post ..lol .. so anyways, if it wasn't in the previous post, I appoligize ... lol!!!

JF .. I'm not sure we could have send a reliable probe to Chiron in a timely manner !!!

I'm guessing they used information from tellescopes to guestimate what the planet would be like !!!

You are right though .. alot would depend on the circumstances .. if I was happily married with kids or something, I probably wouldn't go .. but seeing as how I'm completely single right now, I'm fairly sure I would go !!! Read Maya's quote in the thread she started to find out why !!!

That quote means something to me ... and I really don't think anyone who that quote means something to would ever say no to going to AC, unless it conflicted with the interest of others !!!

As for what would I bring ???

Alot would depend on what was being brought for everyone .. no point in bringing my favorite CD if the history of music would be in the ships archives !!!

In terms of something truly personal, I really don't know ... I liked my idea of Maya's quotes, but they'd also probably be in the archives brought along !!!

I may be somewhat materialistic on this world, but most of my belongings are really data and the equipmant to use it !!!
(Ex .. My software & Computer, my movies & TV/VCR, my records/CDs & Turntables/CD player) .. all these could be replaced on AC eventually !!!

I guess I might bring along a bottle of Southern Comfort and a bottle of Jack Daniels !!!

I guess maybe I'd bring a couple of the pictures my little sisters drew for me ... lol .. they always make me smile no matter how messy they are !!!

And some St. Viateur bagels !!! yummy !!!

Anyone who lives in Montreal knows what I'm talking about !!!

And of course I'd bring some NYM and some NIM!!!
But those go without saying !!!

Jeff .. lol .. speaking of staying away from the Factions .. I actually have already started a new faction !!!

It's Called the Canadian 8th Faction !!!

jfrazier posted 11-13-98 01:38 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for jfrazier  Click Here to Email jfrazier
DJR: I read most of the 8th Faction thread and truly enjoyed the reading. I have to admit, that is what drew my attention to actually "participating" more in these forums, aside from the interest in SMAC. Enjoyed your points made in the 8th faction.

As for life on AC, the temptation would be to try and make it with those folks that didn't want to be subjected to oppression, for whatever reason(s). Iwould steer clear from Santiago, wouldn't touch Yang, Saratov may be liveable but not practical (the brainy types tend to miss the more important things to survival), peacekeepers may be the most liveable, but I would fear there policies or incompetencies about the important issues, and the Gaians, unless there is plenty of trees and plant or animal life, what the H*** are they going to actually do on AC???

I am kind of a loner anyway and would draw the malcontents into an independent faction of some type.

Oh, DJ, that 8th Faction thread is really really long. How about a new go at that thread.

This may sound silly, and please forgive me for not knowing this, but why the 8th Faction? Is there a symbolice to this number? At first, I was thinking the 8th Canadian Infantry, which I think fought in WWII was what you were copying from. Those Canadian brothers were a tough lot. Glad to have had them with us in that war!!

Yep. Without hesitation. It would be one of the biggest(if not the biggest) adventure mankind would have undertaken to that point. The only thing I can think of on a par would be some of the voyages of discovery here on Earth, the trip to the Moon, and the first colony on another planet.

Yes, I would go in a hearthbeat. I always wanted to become an astronaut (seriously!). I'll send my application to the CSA/NASA after I graduate. I know my chances are (almost) nil, but this is a dream I had since I was only a kid, and I can always hope... =)

So if someone told me I could go if I wanted to, you beat I would! =)

I would do (almost) anything to be part of such expedition. I'd settle with colonizing Mars though

As a kid I spent many cold hours looking at the sky, cursing those evasive aliens and daring them to take me from this god forsaken place :-)

I got a lot more sceptical about the whole alien thing since then :-)

Now that I'm married, the decision would be much more difficult (as my wife is not an explorer sort of person :-) ). Although I'm not sure, if I'd have such an opportunity, the urge to go would be probably so strong that I wouldn't be able to resist it. Broken hearts (slowly) heal, but if I wouldn't go, I would not fogive myself for the rest of my life. (UN)Fortunatelly, I will definitely not have to make this decision in real life :-(.

What would I take? Well, does it matter? I'm going to AC - I'd be out of my mind from the excitement. Although I'd spend the rest of my (short?) life feeling sorry for not taking some xyz. :-)

As I usually do when we're holidaying in Spain - like the UK to european mains plug adaptor :-)

Oh, that wasn't really an answer, was it? Well, I'd take my CDs and at least a few books. No point in taking games, as they require Windows nowdays and I'd definitely not take THAT with me :-)

Maya ... when you say you're serious about aplying to be an astronaut, what is it you'd like to do up there ??? Besides be amazed at the view that is !!!

Did you have a medical experiment in mind (I'm guessing this because you're in med school right now) ... or do you just want to do it ???

Don't be too disapointed if you get turned down by NASA, I'm sure comercial flights into sub-space (not the star-trek kind ... I just mean the low orbit) will be available within our lifetime for somewhere in the $200,000 to $500,000 range !!! I'm guessing before your 50th Birthday !!! (You R 25ish right ???)

The thing about becoming an astronaut is that you need to be very highly skilled and motivated. I've looked into that sort of thing, and you need either 2 degrees (one to PhD level) or a degree and flying experience (preferably high-speed jets (military)).
I'm on my way to getting the first of my degrees (not to PhD level as yet) in molecular biology, and i was thinking of doing a second degree in robotics.
This should make me one of the prime candidates for an eventual mission to mars (ability to do genetic engineering on food crops, and robotics should be good enough), as i also have my first aid certificate. I haven't gotten around to flying yet, but i might just become a mission specialist.
I did a couple of weeks of astronaut training when i was seventeen. It was a lot of astrophysics, and an awful lot of physical exercise, so if you're not fit you don't stand a chance (unless you're a US senator
This was with ESA, so i'm going to get in touch with them after my first degree to see what they recommend, and might write off to NASA as well since i am planning on doing my graduate studies in the States.
)

There's a number of companies that want to do commercial launches, including passenger ones, sometime over the next couple of decades. Once that happens then the technology should improve by leaps through competition.
