I suspect that the '94 elections were a reaction to Clinton's health care plan, which the American people saw as socialized medicine, which goes against what a lot of Americans believe in. Once the Republicans got in power, they thought they were riding some sort of ideological revolution and became far too right wing for their own good, for which Bob Dole paid the price in '94 (even though he is a pretty moderate guy -- and known as a compromiser -- he was successfully painted as "another Republican extremist). I now suspect that the public is pretty happy with the current split in power between Republicans and Democrats. Neither party can get much done, and therefore neither party can screw things up. People are pretty happy with the way things are right now. (Note: I'd like to see some changes, but the populace seems to disagree with me...).
