I have heard a rumor that the release date has been pushed back to January '99.
Firaxis: Is this true? Or is the game still going to be released this fall as stated in the FAQ?

This is true. The release has been pushed back to January 99. There is a write-up on this at Gamespot and Gamecenter.com. It could even be pushed back from there. The reason for the push back was to ensure a quality game; instead of a release for the Christmas holiday that would require patches galore to fix. There is actually a lot of this going on in the gaming community, where distributors and designers are deciding to hold on to projects to make sure they are ready instead of trying to cash in right away and then they end-up pissing off players because the game wasn't really ready for release.
But, according to sources, the demo should be out in a couple of weeks.

Could you post a URL for these announcements about SMAC's delay. I've checked and can't find any reference that corraborates your claim.

According to the current issue of GameWeek (targeted for software retailers only) the release date for SMAC is now 2nd QTR '99! Can someone from Firaxis confirm or deny this information? Has anyone else encountered a similar date in any other industry journals?

DAT... it says in the file ( beyond ) that the demo will ber released on the 20th of december.
and the game will be released 4-6 weeks later.
I think it says in the interview that the release is due to January which makes the 4-6 weeks saying quite true ( its stated in the FAQ that the game will be released 4-6 weeks after the demo )

Seems to me the 20th is what I've heard somewhere, but officially, Firaxis says
"January 1999"

I recognize that 19-Jan-99 is the date that is being proffered to potential customers via the gaming magazines, online interviews, FAQ's, and so on. What I'm saying is that the official magazine for communicating the same sort of information to retailers has now posted a 2Q '99 date. Perhaps Game Week is in error. Perhaps Firaxis and their publisher are releasing different information. Or perhaps there is more bad news yet to come, that the retailers have been told about and that we have not. As with most of the posts at this site, this is wild speculation based on the thinnest of information. But it IS based on published information.

There is a slightly modified FAQ up, with some new info (the demo will be released December 20th, and the game in January of 1999.) There is a new, very cool screen background in Cool Stuff.
I think that's the latest official word from Firaxis.
