As some could have read elsewhere, I prepared an accelerated start scenario for a SMAC PBEM.

Large
Dense (Coud Cover )
Thinker
Blind Research OFF

anything else average or default.

7 factions all more or less playable with interest (or wimpable if needed!).
I tried not to develop all of them the same way, but according to their character.
Tha map was randomly generated, and then slightly adjusted.
The factions were evenly spaced, still some of them are more likely to make contacts some 5-10 years before other (depending on which techs you'll go on researching...).
I actually played the turns, so no special circumstances arose or are to be found. Only from time to time I wrecked some little havoc upon the most rated, and helped along the slowest ones.

No contacts have been made yet.
No SPs were started.

I've played it till 2129,
3-4 bases+colony pods each
Aredhran's PBEM rules, with extensions in "CMN HEADLINE NEWS", apply.
I'm inclined to leave you set your own passwords (if you peek in next player's turn, he will know it!), honesty is the ultimate issue as obvious. If really needed I'll set the PW tho.

I will need your faction pick preferences.
If you want, I can play 10-15 turn further, although I'd prefer not to.
In that case, I could also send you your turns as they are now, to be played on as Single Player, then you send me back and I'll use it as a guideline for hotsitting till later starting Mission Year. But that way you'd have a preview of your position: however, that wouldn't be much of a spoil because you'll have to do with MY simultaneous play in the end.

Nuff said, I'll wait for your applications.
Oh, one more thing: I'm not the one to limit the number of human players, the first ones will vote if they want to play in 4 or in 5-6-7.
I'm going now to check and report below the already posted applications.

From my real last name, I'll style myself as a CM(N) as "Skill Ace", shortly Ace

I've already applied "elsewhere"... but let's do it again (redundancy won't kill anyone)

I'd rather play a 3-4 human game (experience shows it gets too slow with more), PBEM is bad enough as it is.

Faction pick: Hmmm, let me think. Since I've never tried them MP, and if Goob doesn't apply, I'll take Morgan . But I'm not adamant about this, so if anybody else want him, I'll go for UoP or PK.

Beware all those who dare to tickle Planet, for I, Lord Zod of the Gaians, am prepared to execute the "eradicate human" terraform command.

ARedRun, you beat me again, you're too fast, I'm just a Watcher of the Skye.
After all you started directly as 'Civer'...

So far, we have

1.Aredhran, Morganites (UoP,PK)
2.Meister Weizenkeim
3.Lord Zod [jimmytrick], Gaians
and
(4.?)cousLee, implicit from "CMN wanted, (TLB?)

Please cousin, confirm or deny.
U.S.S.R. (Unless Someone Strongly Requests) more players, I'll close it at FOUR.
Or maybe in case of a last minute fifth applicant, an unanimous vote of the 'Former Fours' might let him in.

Maybe there are some settings that may still be corrected b4 closing the scenario, w/out throwing it all up, e.g. Aggressive AIs, or the single AI's personalities; or the game level (currently Thinker). Hints welcome.

I'll be online another 1/2 hour, after that you'll have to wait till 0730 GMT.

Darkstar *absolutely* has to play in this one ;-).
And me too, of course.
Other than that i am with Aredhran. 3 humans are enough in PBEM.
I would go Gaian, just to be able to use "Master Wheatsprout"

Ace: Skilled, yes, but not quite fast enough, Little Grasshopper (remember the Kung Fu series ?)

Like I said before: for #4 slot, ask DarkStar... he expressed interest in the other challenge but was left out due to some confusion when Meister W assigned the factions.

EREWHON sounds familiar. Where does that name come from ?

Hey guys......I am a newbie to PBEM, so I might get your way somewhat. I would be willing to bow out if so, but, could someone point me to a newbie game so I can learn the basics. The SP game AI is a little ducky, and I would like to try PBEM.

Jimmy/Zod/whatever you want to be called :

No problem with "newbies" for me (I hate that term anyway). PBEM is not complicated, anyway. Basically, you just play your turn, save it and send it to the next players...

Now, if you don't feel like fighting with the big boys , why don't you just post a message in the forums requesting for players ? I'm sure you'll find lots of interested people.

MeisterWk, please give yor PBEM a name!
So in yours you picked the cousin instead of DarkStar. Then DS goes in slot 4.

Someone send me his e-mail, or I'll have to parse the forum!

There's a poor whining goob that cant fill his greed with 20 PBEMs running and wants to be in this one too. Actually the time stamp in "CMN wanted" says he posted before Lord Zod. But I guess he just showed helpful in case we lacked of applicants (izitso?).
So unless the four badly want him in (hardly, since they were ready to go in 3), he's out (hey Goob, it's not me, it's the crowd's roar, do you hear it?).

OK, with two browser open now I'll track you down!
Aredhran, Lord Zod spoiled you post-in-a-row record.
Jimmytrick you're welcome amongst us, we all were rookie not so long ago.
If MWk wants, you name a second faction and I assign Gaians by toss.

slot 1 & 2 are iron riveted

DarkStar did't show up, maybe due to time zone/online availability.
His place was anyway reserved from the previous list. Mind tho DS that Erewhon is Large size too (44x90).
For the 4th slot Goob posted b4 but elsewhere, so I await a confirmation.
I'd like to have Lord Zod in, but he must show some determination: if he does'n feel sure of himself, we'll have him next time.

Lord Zod: stand for your rights! now!

Guys, I really have to retire to regenerate my inner self now.

CMN Ace nearly out.

Erewhon: reverse of Nowhere (just keep 'wh' together)
It's sort of an Utopia, but I can't recall right now who, when and where wrote it.
I was just short of suitable names.
I kept "El Titon" (c) for better uses

Zod/JT please play.

Most likely MariOne created some weird AYtalian type world anyway...

Seriously, I am sure to be able to add to my PBEM glut in the near future, and hopefully with all of you. Whether in some MoSe begat world or another.

Goob,

PS I will still play if someone backs out.
I may have to hunt down Darkstar and see what the haps is.

... Like in Bunuel's movie ("L'angelo sterminatore" in italian), I just can't get out of this room!

I tracked down Darkstar address (from never enough praised Social Engineering thread) and e-mailed him.

LORD ZODD!!!
If you don't provide me your e-mail address, you aren't obviously eligible for PBEM!

We'll have to stick with Goob!
Once more, unless the Former Threes decide they're enough on their own .

I want to CMN you right now, Goob, but how many PBEMs have you running (sheer curiosity)?

from now on my challenge will be known as "Weizenxxxx"
Weizen stands for a Bavarian beer specialty, (in the best best Homer Simpson voice: hmmmm, Beeer), the xxxx for the year played.

I'm quite happy to play the Hive (or any faction really) instead of the Gaians. No need for a coin toss ;-)

While it may be a "deigned" game it will certainly be a "designed" game.

Yes jimmytrick you do need to post it in at least four other languages - it is a "newbie" rule. One of the languages must be a bizarre MoSe speak - Firaxis is working on a SMAC patch 3.0 for MoSe speak even as we contemplate this.

Other than that I hope your question was asked with as much humor as this response was posted.

It is hard for me to tell with "newbies"

Lord Zod,
I wanted to put your patience and attention to test!

Your exhaustive information was bracketed and overrun by Aredhran's hectic row-posting.

Now, where do we stand?

1.Aredhran, Morgan (CET)
2.Meister Weizenkeim, Hive (CET)
3.Lord Zod, Gaia (EST)

4.DarkStar?

Stand by / replacement list:
5.GoobMeister (PST)
6.JGMagnus, PK (!!) (EST)
7.cousLee (CST)

I'm still waiting for a reply from DarkStar.
I'd like to have him, but how long want YOU to wait?

From TimeZones, I'd say that for now only 1. & 2. may be online, apart from cousLee, 24h round, and Goob, if he's up late.

So, I am ready to go, for spot #4, and eventually 5 & 6, I await you votes.

MoSe posted 05-04-99 05:10 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MoSe  Click Here to Email MoSe
Current standings updated, in order of play:

1. Lord Zod of the Gaians, 2300-0500 GMT
2. Chairman Flomeise (CET, he posts @ work/univ?...)
3. Provost Darkstar, 0000-0800 GMT
4. CEO Aredhran, 1800-2300 GMT

Since there's plenty of time before the first player's time window, no need of rushing it.

I'll send Lord Zod his turn around 1800 GMT.
Please post and e-mail me before that time if you want to have something changed in these settings (more players, diffculty level, change your faction and /or the order of play).

With this sequence of play (determined by your faction picks) I'm afraid the standard speed would be 2 days per turn, crossing back and forth the Atlantic.
Easiest workaround would be giving Darkstar the PKs (4th in his picking order, being his 2nd and 3rd taken).
Unfortunately, he won't be online to confirm, so after hearing available opinions, I'll have to take the decision using my authority.

Unless you agree to wait for tomorrow...

Greetings and Salutations!

Thanks for keeping a spot open for me. I am honored and grateful.

I have corresponded with MoSe/Ace... If you would rather drop me to PK, can do. I was surprised to have gotten my first pick, but things will work out, I suppose...

MoSe, do you want Aredhran to send you a copy (per last player in turn)?

Aredhran, do you have Unzipping capability? I thought you had mentioned you do.

3 Letter passwords might be a bit short (per player keeping a letter of each opponent). Thoughts?

cousLee posted 05-04-99 05:31 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for cousLee  Click Here to Email cousLee
I dont think the password problem is much of an issue in CMN sponsored games. The CMN creates the passwords. If the CMN leaves, the players select a new CMN and forward their passwords to that person. If a player leaves, the CMN has the password.

just my .02 worth

MoSe posted 05-04-99 05:38 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MoSe  Click Here to Email MoSe
Passwords:
to set them,
I'd let the players the task,
trusting them not to peek into netx player's positions. Unless you REQUEST me to set them.
As far as I know, that would mean for me actually play a turn as multipalyer PBEM, instead from inside the scenario editor.

to store and keep them in a safe place,
you can take advantage of my CMN services (and powers). no need so to pass PW or letters to other players, nor to limit PW length.

Of course I expect last player to send me too his turn. I was actually wondering, a PBEM save can't be switched to scenario mode, so I might need all of your saves, just to check what's going on from time to time.

I assume Zip capabilities by default, you must explicitly state otherwise.

MoSe- what I do to keep track of my Challenge when I receive your save is to "play" each faction in turn. Of course, that does not let one track the AI

Darkstar- can zip, no prob'...
It would really help if I played before you. I don't know your other choices are, but I can play UoP if you prefer Morgan to the PK (I don't really care, I just want to *PLAY*), so that leaves the Yuppies, GunFreaks, Antechrist and MrTurban for you to choose from.

MoSe posted 05-04-99 06:19 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MoSe  Click Here to Email MoSe
Oh, I see, no omniscient view, then....

DS picks are: Univ, Hive, Gaia, PK, Morgan, Sparta, Miriam.

So 3rd solution could be MeisterWk leaving him his place and choose between Univ, Sparta, TLB, PK.

But since he agreed to take PK, that would be enough to grant us a round-the-globe turn passing. Here's the update:

1. Lord Zod of the Gaians, 2300-0500 GMT
2. Chairman Flomeise (CET, he posts @ work/univ?...)
3. CEO Aredhran, 1800-2300 GMT
4. Brother Darkstar (K of P?), 0000-0800 GMT

noon and counting... tickin' to _17.30_GMT deadline.

So, Aggressive AI made it in the settings.
I did hamper a bit UoP's position, now that it will be played by an AI, I gave it back some of its strength. I think the game overrates his standings.

Initial turn, 2130, is ready to send to Lord Zod.

I'll start a thread in Apolyton,

http://apolyton.net/forums/

under the AC Multiplaying forum, just for turn tracking purpose, since that's the trend.

As for narration, I'll heavily rely on YOUR reports. The best thing will be you doing you posting.
I saw other CMN move the narrative thread to Apolyton as well. I call for their advice on that matter.

You'll get a copy of Erewhon.doc by mail.

Oh, in the end _I_ did set your passwords.

I won't be preparing a new scenario very soon.
But it struck my mind, I can recycle this one!

So, all current applicants may have a chance to start soon.
I think it will be interesting to see how several sets of players handle the same starting settings.

If your serious about setting up multiple games for your creation, please consider me for one of them. I'm generally available from 8:00am to midnight PST and can play whichever faction is available. I hope this helps in the case of time zone optimizing.
