Another PBEM is starting. I want to get everyone's preferences and than start the game on the 21st.
Settings:
* Blind research (more realistic)
* Huge random map
* Normal native life
Other preferences can be discussed.

I'll reserve the Gaian's for myself ans setup the game. Just let me know if you're intersted.

What are the players skill levels? I'm always good for more PBEM's with any faction, but I'm a Transcend/Ironman, so not very much fun for less experienced players.

Count me in. Prefers PK and high difficulty. Remaining settings not a major issue.
If cant play PK whatever other faction will do.
Have 5 years of CIV2 and may soon get divorced and fired as SMAC is getting all my spare time and when mail arrives then obviously you need to do your moves regardless of disturbances like having deadlines at work.
Gyllius posted 06-10-99 06:22 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Gyllius  Click Here to Email Gyllius
Okay, so far the players are:
Gaians: Gyllius
Hive: Ceky
Morganites: Morn
PeaceKeepers: Dhengis Kim
So three slots are open.

Ceky and myself are new to this PBEM game, so I don't know if the level is high enough for MichaeltheGreat, but he's welcome to play if he wants. Just let me know.

Dhengis, what do you mean with high difficulty. Any specific gamesettings you refer to?

Dhengis Kim posted 06-10-99 07:33 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Dhengis Kim  Click Here to Email Dhengis Kim
By high difficulty level I mean thinker or transcend - best transcend. Its not a must but I like it best that way as it keeps the AI from falling too far behind too easily and requires much more careful management of your cities. If others do not want it like this my general view is the higher the better.

To further clarify I am just referring to the citizen to transcend ladder of choices. The other settings (blind research, native life etc.) are not a problem.

Hmmph!

Laurens, what's your favourite? Maybe we can switch some factions, or try another faction, see it as a new challenge!

"Mr. Yang, are you from China?

...........
Juz a joke.

Honestly, I really want to commend you on your bravery in taking on the Gaians...
That was not a prejudiced statement, really, coz I favored psi warfare. But the negative morale and police modifiers are bad.

I'm awaiting a PBEM game from MichealtheGreat, but haven't got any emails yet. Meanwhile, since your game commences on 21 June, you can put me on the floating list as the Spartans.

My thoughts on game settings (which I feel would make for a tougher, more realistic game):

Completely randomized huge map, don't set anything else.
Blind research on
Fog of War on

As MtG said "I'm always good for more PBEM's with any faction".
I prefer the highest possible level too, but can accomodate for thinker (gghh... or even , ack, librarian).

Do you want to fill all factions with human players? You can always leave some to AI.
If you still look for someone, I'd pick University (rather than Miriam).
With 7 human players tho, timezones, or much more relevant, actual SMAC playing time windows are very critical for the pace of a PBEM. If you want to optimaze it, maybe not everybody would be able to pick his favorite faction, some arrangement must be made. The difference may result in 3 turns per week instead of 5-6, so it's NOT a minor point.
I have recently connected at home too, so my addiction allows me to be more or less available 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, @work my mailbox always open.

If you not already did it, I invite to join and use ACOL site, www.an.i-dentity.com/ac.cgi

PS: laurens, Fog of War is not a game rule, just a visual preference each one can alter on his PC for each game he plays.

Hi

Im interessted, but I would prefer SLOW RESEARCH.

Another Cool Option is the where you steal technology when conquering a base.

Are you guys using enhancement 3.0 with U.S. versions (Im too)

I'll play. I'll take the UoP. Will you still play in my PBEM though Gyllius?

Hi Niki, I saw your new topic, but i'll answer you here.
You have to consider that playing against humans is different than having to face just the AI. I'm not sure if slowing the research would be appropriate in a PBEM.
Spoils of War (steal tech too when conquer) has been longly debated, and while Blind Research has still a lot of fans (I prefer it off but like to play blind too), a vast majority find SoW too easy, you have to use probes.

US 3.0 for me too

Okay, I think we have enough players now, so be patient, you'll hear from me in 9 days, 'cause I'm of to Norway tomorrow. Discussions on setting can go along, I'll take it all into consideration on the 21st...

Okay, let the games begin!
I have set up the game with blind research, timewarp, on a huge random planet, with 7 human factions.
Gaians : Gyllius
Hive : Ceky
University : MoSe
Morganites : Morn
Spartans : Laurens
Atomic : Believers
Dhangis Kim : Peacekeepers

Is everybody OK with this? Just let me know if you are and also if you're not (or don't wanne play, then I'll replace that faction). Preferably on this thread.
So the first Gaian turn is played and the game is sent to Ceky.
Good Luck!

WHAT????? Why am I playing as the believers I HATE miriam. Please can I play a different faction any other faction would be ok.
MoSe posted 06-22-99 08:22 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MoSe  Click Here to Email MoSe
I forgot about this one!

I assume any non mentioned setting is left as default, that is Spolis of War OFF and Tech Stagnation OFF.

I said I could take any faction.
Now that the game already started, we could only switch factions with the ones that haven't get their turn yet. as long as this doesn't screw the turn passing timezones sequence.
I could switch with atomic94 if he wansts, but I'm already playing the Believers in 2 (or were they 3?) PBEMs, thus I'd prefer PKs (could settle for Sparta or Morgan, in that order), and we should be doing a 3-way shuffle.
In the end, if for atomic it's NO Believers or bust, I could play as Miriam one more time (a challenge indeed, but not my favorite).

We should also agree on rules:
-options, like allowing free communications, or in-game contact first like in single player; or not allowing base-trades with AI, since human factions can't.
-cheats, and there's a long debate and dedicated threads ongoing here. Even if you do not agree and want to use some cheats na bugs in the game, we must state it clearly before we start the game, so that everyone is warned. I could send you a basic rules.doc we use in nearly all PBEMs.

What has the level been set to?

Hi, laurens. Luckily our misunderstanding (my fault) in "good bug" was settled before we meet here ! btw, will we be allowed to use that new cheat ?

As the habit is catching, we should think to go in ACOL (www.planetsid.com) and register our PBEM there, and/or to Apolyton (apolyton.net/forums), to start a separate individual turn tracking thread.

Finally, to take advantage of my extended online time window, you should send all messages to BOTH my home and work e-mail: I can't read the work e-mailbox from home, but the home e-box is not very reliable.

Guess that's it 4 now

Let me know before I get my supposed UoP turn from Hive to play

Hmmm.. Some slight startingproblems. Ceky is not going to play along. I will setup a new game tonight or tomorrow morning (GMT+1)
Gaians: Gyllius
Hive: Atomic
University: MoSe
Morganites: Morn
Spartans: Laurens
Believers: AI(!)
PeaceKeepers: Dhengis Kim

Settings will be:
Thinker-Level
Blind Resaerch
TimeWarp
All Victories OK
Huge planet
Average rest...
NO SOW
NO slow Tech

Rules:
In-play contact as in Single Player Mode
No cheats unless discussed and agreed upon here.....
No trading bases

Everybody Okay with this?
I'll try to send Atomic the turn as soon as possible.
Good Luck again...

Okay, the first turn has been sent to the Hive (that's Atomic). Mongoose will be playing the Believers (so no AI-factions in this game).

Hi guys!

Sorry to reply so late, juz managed to reply to Gyllius' wake-up call.

To Mose, the little conversation that we had was perfectly alright, at least we can get to know each other better - an unfair advantage here *hiaks*

Luckily the Believers was taken by Mongoose, coz if it's a Thinker AI I suppose that will be a foregone conclusion.

Okay, tha game is on it's way and there is a new thread to keep track of the turns, and it can also provide a place to utter your thought's about progress on Planet.
The name is Planet's Garden.

This thread will selfdestruct in 10 days.....
