I know most of you people here are probably just artists who like to use your talents for making good stories in the SMAC-universe, and you're probably not interested in this, but I'll post it anyway;
I was thinking of a page collecting "scientific reports" (fiction of course) about studies into different things on Chiron, focusing mainly on things concerning the mind worms, islands of the deep, locusts and stuff about the monoliths and the race that must have made them. I want your personal ideas on the different phenomena on Chiron, to post them on a page. Please tell me if this sounds interesting (I'll be making the page anyways, but I want to know how people feel about it). Also I would really appreciate it if anyone would mail me their "reports". If you have some pictures that might go with the report just add them to the doc, or send them along.

RK,

You'll get a report on the AC mist-squid by Monday. [It's a creature created in the AFC -- it's something like an aerial jellyfish.]

Thanks, Borodino, I really appreciate that. By the way, folks, you can now visit my temporary page at:
surf.to/smac

It's only there to collect reports and other stuff, but there's a little more information there, so just go there if you're interested in my idea.

Rigil_Kentaurus,
I have written a couple of descriptions of alien Monoliths/Obelisks. You can find them buried somewhere in the AFC threads. Look for the "Hand of God" settings. I was actually thinking about an alien artifact story too. Vamos a ver.
Borodino also has a huge alien canal/lock system to his credit.

Report 118A

Author: Miyabe Minamoto, Mission Xenobiologist, Narmonov Exploratory Expedition
Class: Science -- Xenobiology -- New Species Encounter
Subject: Species Discovery 79 -- Aerial Cniderian
Timestamp: 001/18.8 -- One year and one-hundred and eighty nine days after planetfall

Physical Description of Species:

Maximum Observed Length -- ~2.1 m
Minimum Observed Length -- ~.9 m
Maximum Observed Circumference -- ~1.1 m
Minimum Observed Circumference -- ~.2m
Estimated Mass: Not Enough Data -- No More Than 1.47 kg

The species most resembles the jellyfish of Earth, displaying radial symmetry, a transluscent cap, and dangling tentacles. It would, according to Earth's nomenclature, have been a cniderian, save one peculiar feature: it floats in air.

This adaption is thus far nearly unique among Chiron's observed fauna, for no other creature except the tiny alpha gnat has been observed to take flight in this planet's heavy gravity. Best hypothesis as to cause of capability: the central sac most likely serves as a gas storage chamber, much like a blimp. The most probable gas is simple H2, which is less flammable in Chiron's nitrogen heavy atmosphere.

Capture and disection of the organism is reccommended to complete futher study.

Behavioral Description:

The data thus far collected is slim. The organism is definitely carnivorous, having been seen feeding upon a variety of other native lifeforms; primarily, thus far, alpha gnats and AC shrews. We have also obeserved a tendency towards pack behaviour. We have not yet see any mistsquid without at least three other mistsquids in "visual" range. [Note: primary sense organ not yet none -- visual refers to human vision]

Further observation warranted.

********************************************

It's a start. I can revise and extend if you would like.

It looks just fine. Just one question though; are alpha gnats and locusts of Chiron the same thing? Or are locusts non-existent in the AFC? Or is this simply placed in time before the locusts have been discovered?

This is actually just the kind of thing I want, so I really appreciate it.

Locusts of Chiron had not yet been mentioned when I created the alpha gnat and mistsquid. I think the best answer is that they haven't been encountered yet. It takes a long time to find them in the game, so I imagine it would take a long to for us in the AFC to reach them.
