The other night I read the entire Alpha Centauri story -- the 35 chapters and the six new ones so far. I was really struck at the difference between the way Miriam appeared in the text and the way she seemed in the game. I suppose it's a moot point, but I almost get the impression the SMAC team was originally going to do the Believers as more "early Christians" than fundamentalists, esp. considering Miriam's nonviolence in that scene with her and Saratov/Zakharov. I also liked the way Miriam was clinically dead when her cyrocell opened, and then she came back to life...

Her question from a late-game advance (I forget which) why a perfect God would create a universe at all, that line makes more sense in this context...

Anyway, my favorite faction remains the UN (I loved that bit at the end, Lal made tired by the weight of a failing Charter), but I wonder how a more pacifistic, thrown-to-the-lions, Christians faction might have gone... extra probe, still, from the fervency of beliefs, but replace a research penalty with a morale penalty (they don't like violence), making it -1 research, -1 morale. Maybe something like one fewer drone... I don't know. Has this come up before? Has someone done up a Faith-Hope-Charity faction already?

"We Must Dissent" sounds like nonviolent protest to me... as opposed to "We Must Eradicate" or "We Must Purify" or even "We Must Simplify."

God waits in heaven, but we are beyond heaven now... that's cool.

I don't know why Firaxis made the Believers an agressive faction. It might of made more sense to make the Spartans agressive and the Believers erratic. I read something about religious conquerors are seeking salvation and those who are more non-violent are those with salvation. Anyway about the research penalty that is the Believers major thing. Christians don't accept everything science said but they don't reject it.

Tally Ho,
