First of all I would like to ask that we all start being friends and not bicker about science. I will ask for an ammendment to the RP Charter that does not allow science that is below SMAC'S 'Hardness' Scale. SMAC is 7 Battlestar Galactica being 1. The RP council would vote on major breakthroughs. (not minor science). Hows does that sound?

Anyway onto my main topic
I have always admired Venus, with its fluorosulphuric acid clouds and it's molten lead temperatures. That planet has a savage beauty to it.
I propose that 5 factions (and myself) terraform Venus, so that we can breath on its surface. We would turn it into a peaceful research Colony. I have the details if anybody wants to sign up. (it involves biological conversion).
The cost for this is quite considerable, that is why I want your help. A 30C Venus would be a monument to peace and friendship. If we win the war we will commence terraforming. If interest is shown I will give the details. If no interest is shown, I will go it alone.

My faction would be more than willing to set up a colony on Venus and to help you terraform it.

First off, Eccles, I'd like to thank you for your statement about arguing. I admit there are people here who know a lot more about science than I do. But that doesn't mean we should get into a thirty post arguement about some sub-quantum definition when I try to make up a weapon or something. Anyway, back to the actual point of this thread.

IC

My Faction would be most glad to help with this noble project. Unfortunatly, we cannot offer any help until the war with the Acheans is over. When it is, I will start terraforming right away.

Lovely.
Korian, we would not need to build bases in the 92Bar, acidic surface of Venus. Bases will be in place after the tertiary phase. (I will explain later).
JT 3 posted 04-22-99 05:48 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for JT 3
Shouldn't we at least set up some minor outposts before the start of the project? Kind of like a starting place for terraformers?

Eccles,
why colonize Venus together when we are fighting over the riches of Planet? It would just open a second battle front, as somebody, probably a Spartan or Hive Member would go for power.

The Hercluxian Republic wishes to aid you, Eccles, in this historic endeavor. It would give us more insite about the Sol system, and maybe blend terraforming techniques that our races have learned over the years.

I shall join on the following conditions:

In exchange for my assitance on this terraforming, I would like to ask this:
After the terraforming is complete, I would like approximately 200 square kilometers, and extra land area to construct a space elevator.

I am prepared to release data files regarding some terraforming techniques we have discovered and acquired.

All except Collins are welcome. But no more!
We will not need any outposts to start with.
The Atmosphere of Venus contains the following:
90% CO2
2% Sulphuric Acid
1% Fluorine (in the form fluorosulphuric acid)
2% Water
4% Nitrogen
1% Trace elements
The plan is basically too:
1/ Seed the atmosphere at 50km up. (the temperature there is 30C and pressure is 1.4 bars. Bacteria that I have modified in my germ warfare department (cyandium caladrium) will move on the currents converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, as plants do. These are resilent to fluorosulphuric acid.

2/ Pressure would be lost, therefore temperature, in the upper atmosphere, and oxygen would sink, along with condensed water and bacteria. A new bacterium would be introduced (I need help on this one). That would take the oxygen from the acid in the sky and make sulphur and Flourine, which
would then form react to form a proto-ozone layer.

3/ With the acid gone and the upper atmosphere cooled and sinking, rain will fall for the first time on Venus, it will not touch the ground, but it will cool the lower atmosphere and let the bacteria reduce pressure.

4/ Rain would fall and average temperature would be 30C. Pressure would be 1.2 bar, final constituents of the new atmosphere:
16% CO2 (not toxic)
40% Nitrogen
4% Water vapour
40% Oxygen
Perfectly habitable!

Only one problem Eccles. My race does not breathe oxygen. We breathe nitrogen. I feel that we should increase the levels of nitrogen in the atmosphere, along with increasing the amount of oxygen. Other than that the proposal gets approval by the Combine.

I believe that we should increase the nitrogen 4% and decrease the CO2 4%.

This would make it easier for us to withstand the air on Venus.

I will send a group of formers to start planting forests once the conversion is complete.
God Emperor Eccles V posted 04-24-99 06:27 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for God Emperor Eccles V  Click Here to Email God Emperor Eccles V
Sorry AoYoSS but adding nitrogen would be virtually impossible. (The nitrogen in the soil and atmosphere is released anyway). It would have to be imported, as no biological process could spread the nitrogen properly(due to its preference for the lithiosphere). Either a planet is born with nitrogen, like earth, or not.
Importing millions of tonnes of Nitrogen would also pointless. (the cost, the deployment, where from?). Besides you must be inefficent to have to have 44% nitrogen. Humans are ok with a lowly 19% Oxygen. (normal tolerances).
What I could do is raise the pressure to 1.5 bar which would compensate, but might cause more ready fires due to the extra retained oxygen.
JT 3 posted 04-24-99 06:47 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for JT 3
Actually, we could artificially create the nitrogen aboard ships orbiting Venus.
God Emperor Eccles V posted 04-24-99 06:56 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for God Emperor Eccles V  Click Here to Email God Emperor Eccles V
As I said it would sink to the lithiosphere and cause tempary growth in the plants, but cause storms and eventual depeation.
Chancellor AoYoS posted 04-24-99 07:04 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Chancellor AoYoS  Click Here to Email Chancellor AoYoS
Please do that Eccles as my race can not stay in an atmostphere with less than 44% nitrogen.

I could always build contained environments but that defeats the whole purpose.

Ok, due to the long peace we can start stage one. I will need you joint efforts later on. This is a shared research base, and will include the strengths of all our contructions, no allocations of land, this is a multi-national base.
JT 3 posted 04-24-99 07:30 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for JT 3
Well, if we could implement a gas that would keep the lithosphere up, then we could import the nitrogen.
JT 3 posted 04-24-99 08:00 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for JT 3
What's so bad about plants? And we can easily control storms. If we can have interstellar travel, we can easily control some storm.
God Emperor Eccles V posted 04-25-99 07:53 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for God Emperor Eccles V  Click Here to Email God Emperor Eccles V
Storms are bad for the Biological cycle of Venus, controling the storms destroys our self sufficency on Venus.

JT 3 posted 04-26-99 01:46 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for JT 3
I have found a way. If we import the four percent nitrogen, we also import four percent helium. This will keep everything equal and is perfectly normal.

I speak to you via a live video feed from Venuses surface.
No, the Terraforming has only just started, but I wanted to show to you the savage beauty of this place.
I am aware that I am not wearing a space-suit. God Emperor's have their advantages.
Look at the yellowed clouds, and the air that ripples under such great pressure. The winds in the lower atmosphere are quite calm.
To prove to you that I am on Venus I will test out my drone.
(he pulls a drone out of his suit)
(the drone visibly crumples, and hisses)
E: that is how dangerous it is to have a base here, let us await a lowering of pressure.

Okay, I guess Collins is in. Korian, remember, this is a peaceful project, and any of your bases there wouldn't be attacked if you were in war. But, I guess it's your loss.
President Korian posted 04-27-99 05:51 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for President Korian
That has absolutely nothing to do with what I just said. I don't want to do this because I could easily start 3 or 4 colonies with the resources I would have to use to terraform Venus.

I know, but those colonies _can_ be attacked and captured, while these couldn't.

I need some help blowing some holes in the lower atmosphere. This would enable the project to be finished within 100 years rather than 8,000. This could be acheived by a massively shortlived singularity, taking in atmosphere, but I will need your help AoYoSS, as only me and your species can survive the pressure. (how do you cope?, I am interested).

We are able to survive because we evolved on a high-gravity world. Our world's gravity is equal to the gravity on Saturn.

I should have gave a better example than that. The world we evolved on has 31.9 gravity units. Our atmosphere is much like Venus', except in the fact that it has much more nitrogen than oxygen and the pressure exerted by our moons is equally that of the Chironian moons.

Sorry for the Confusion.

I am starting to despise the new members that join saying "We respect the rights of the individual and hold democracy.." and all that SH1T. It is just so repetitive. I can cope, but that was a individual OOC rant.

Besides being evil means that I have to think up new atrocites that I have committed
