I don't know, but i have a P-100 with 80 MB RAM at home, and generated a mostly water map that was about 256 by 256.The continents were as large as any on a normal map, but they looked like tiny islands, and were a long, long way apart.
First contact was by discovering a comm link in a pod. Took ages to find another inhabited landmass. I only saw one AI ship pass my way.
The game ran at an adequate speed, especially considering the map size.
I suspended that game, less because of the speed of turns, and more because it's going to take ages to make much impression on such a vast environment.
Needlejets are going to have some trouble bombing my opponents, because they cannot reach the nearest of them in the two turns allowed!
Looks like Seabases will be the go if i want to expand beyond my own large continent.
