I don't know if this was present in prior versions, but I think it was. Last night, while playing Morgan TI on version 4, two Unity pods were lifted from the sea during terraforming. They were not floating on the sea, they came up from the bottom. The two pods were most welcome, one was enough resources to finish a base structure, and the other was an alien artifact. It sorely tempts me to lift all the seas.

Has anyone else seen this happen?

I've had the same experience.
The council voted the lower the sea levels, and lo and behold, pods appeared on the new coastline of my mainland. And I know they weren't floating on the water before that because I already popped all of the off-shore ones.

It is a welcome suprise.

Well, it's not related to enhancement (patch) 4, but already exist before (see old treads).
The pods are scattered all around by the program that generate the map, also submerged by sea. If you lower the sea level they can emerge. One of them appear to me when the "volcano emerged" event occured (if you don't know, "volcano" it's one of that random event, may be triggered by ecodamage).
There are so many things in SMAC...

You want infinite pods???????????????

I did this in one of the earlier versions of the game. I bet it still works in 4.0.

1) Raise land and pop the pods that come up
2) lower that same land
3) raise that smae land and pop the new pods that show up
4) repeat steps 2 and 3 forever

I've also had resource bonuses appear when I've altered an areas type (land <> sea). I've also had resources change (but disappear that I recall) -- e.g., mineral -> energy. These events occurred under V3.0.

I believe that when you lower and raise terrain the porgram sort of goes through the initial 'what do I put in this square' routine.
