I'm new to this "forum" thing, but it seems that people here talk of committing atrocities as if it's just another way of winning SMAC!!

Retaliation is fair given the fact that you're not the one that initiate it!

I want to know if committing atrocities are not as bad as the word implies. I've never actually obliterate a base even though it's poorly placed and developed! Is it all right to "DO" it?! I want to keep the game as real as possible. Not committing atrocities could very well hamper my faction's progress and even cost me the game! On the other hand as a ruler I do not want to be remembered as "a murderer or a butcher"!!! But it's merely a "game" after all, isn't it???????

I need some input in this!!!(BUT REMEMBER IT IS ONLY A "GAME")

The only atrocity I ever commit is to launch a few PB's at a faction who has really pissed me off. I usually try to get the UN Sanctions repealed before hand, but if they vote no ..., oh well.

I used to commit atrocities left and right, but now I never do (well, I nerve staple during sunspots) because I like energy, and trade supplies it. It isn't worth (to me) losing a large amount of energy for ten years just to cut the population of an enemy bse in half. And if you use nerve gas on an enemy or nuke them, they won't surrender, which I also don't like. (Unless they nuked you, and you are not going to accept any offer of peace from them, even a surrender. If somebody nukes me, I will never allow them to live. I devote my military to destroying the faction that dared to fire a Planetbuster at my people.)

Geez IDR, i never new people cared bout atrocities an stuff. I generally dont like having to much surface area to cover, so if a city is long ways from the heart of my empire (high ineff.) or undeveloped and has no strategic significance to me (such as a repair bay for incomming troops) i normally burn everything and everyone. This does NOT apply to earlygame and midgame were u want as much "stuff" as possible and cant be to picky about where that stuff is or how many goodies it contains. If u r the type that accepts surrender and has submissive pact brothers/sisters u might want to have a better rep, personally i never accept surrender unless its very early game and thier last city has only 1 population point (meaning i wouldnt get the city if i conquered it). Even then i only do it if its the university or morgan. For stuff like nerv gass, very few units i build r not equiped with this wonderfull enhancement once i have reaserched/stolen the tech for it. The +50% attack is just too good to ignore. As far as nukes go, if u r far enough above ocean level to survive the polar melts, and have the production to to pump em out in a reasonable timeframe (wich means u have Massive eco damage) by all means make them "See The Light", and do be sure the shroom cloud dont get overlooked either

Weather to commit atrocities or not ultimately depends on how u r playing the game. If u r a peacefull everybodies buddy type quitely building your empire then stay on the strait an narrow. If on the otherhand u dont gaf and u r a slash an burn independant type then use every advantage at your disposal to dispense with those that r getting in the way of your plans for for the future

Well, actually If I know that I'm not going to win I fire off all my PBs and execute my population.

The only atrocities that I commit are to nerve staple, and that's only during a drone riot (rarely). I have found that its much more economical to let the city governors take care of the populous, then when I decide I need to take over control of the city, I turn the governor off.

I usually don't commit attrocities but there was this one game which i was having a lot of problems with drones. I usually just make empaths or doctors to rid them while i make drone-ridding facilities but during this game i was at war with the pk's, hive and gaians (i was UOP) and i needed my industrial capacity for the war effort. so i nerve stapled drones each time riot came up. soon i was getting overrun by vast numbers (but inferior) enemy forces of the pks and hive so i started building nerve gas troops to minimize my casualties. The sanction years were racking up bigtime now so i figured i might go all the way. i built tons of PBs and broke all the treaties that i had. (vendetta on the whole world). i either nerve gased or PBed all enemy cities. I won in record time but at the end i had 100,000 years worth of sanctions and my integrity was infamous.

I never commit atrocities. IF I am pb'd by a faction, I will retaliate with everything I got and exterminate the offending faction.

The mushroom cloud comes twice when you launch a PB in SMAC. Build a bunch of trance and empath units before you launch or the fungus will be eating you.

I only commit atrocities after Yang PB's my headquarters and two or three best SP's with it. Never, ever accept surrender from a faction that does that to you, they're just biding their time until they can do it again.

Yeah, that's a lesson I learned in my latest game (Transcend) I was Hive and conquering the Spartans, who destroyed my capital and two SPs in a PB attack. After I had broken the back of the Spartan resistence, they surrendered, and since I was tired of the war and wanted peace I accepted. Well, that's just fine and dandy until I run for Supreme Ruler and although the Spartans vote for me, they defy the will of the Council! So then I had to exterminate them.
