Greetings! I just recently joined this Forum, and I hope to be a regular. That is, if I can find enough time away from Real Life and SMAC to post here occaisonally. =) Anyway, my question is: Is it better to create cities for a sole purpose (eg Energy, Minerals, Food, etc) or rather to have them all "generalize"? I have tried both ways, and have actually found that they work well in different scenarios. What do you guys think?

Science cities are definately worth using. Most of the time 1 or 2 of my cities are generating 75-90% of my tech output. |

Your high energy and high science city will likely be the same one since amount of energy influences amount of science. I always have a high mineral city especially if I can find the Alien Borehole Cluster or the Ruins. Then you can build the SP's real quick. But then you've got to worry about stacks of Worms exploding out of the fungus. And the Hive seems to like launching PB's at my best bases. |

I agree. 1-3 Science cities (high energy) and 1-3 Production cities (high Minerals).Elevate the land in science cities and have a farm/solar device in every square. Drill 1-2 boreholes in the production cities. |

There are some ruins called "Manifold" something or another (I'm horrible with names, heh). Anyway, can anyone tell me if it provides any bonuses if a city is constructed in their limits? Thanks. |

It gives your faction a +1 planet rating. |

Sun Tzu -- depends on your faction, location, stage of the game, etc. If your game strat needs research, then at least one tech city is required -- see other threads for how to do this (but one hint is masses of supply crawlers). As to the rest, it depends on what strategy and tactics you are employing. A conquering strat will require more minerals -- preferably at the frontline. A builder strat will require population, etc. Your city planning will follow logically from your game strat. My personal preference is that research is the name of the game, so that, following your namesake's advice (incidentally -- great thread), you can win without losing a man (pretty much) by scaring/buying the others off with your super technology.
