Hey, I have been trying to find real-world matches to the seven factions. Here's what I've got some far:

Peacekeepers: Why America of course! Both prefer democracy, both have problems with effiency, and both try to control the world by delegating how the rest of humanity should behave. (Sorry)

Gaians: Celtic druids (or 70s hippies)(or the Sierra Club)

Spartans: Duh. I don't think this one needs any explanation.

Morganites: The Carthaginians. The whole purpose of their society and wars were to make money.

Believers: The Holy Roman Empire. (Catholic Church in the Middle Ages)

Hive: Communist China. Oppresive, powerful; a perfect match to the Hive.

The only one that I can't think of a match for is the University. What country or culture has been devoted only to science?

Can anybody think of a match for the University, or a better match for any of the others?

Well...for the Peacekeepers I think a better match would be <drum roll> the UN!!!
duh :-)

The University...Microsoft!
They both are devoted to technology and they're both untrustworty and treacherous
hmmm...maybe Zakharov IS Bill Gates...you can't really tell what with the glasses

Are you kidding? It's obvious that Morgan Industries is the equivalent of Microsoft.

"Of course we'll bundle our Morgan-soft software with every network node. It's not that we have a monopoly. Our products are just so good no one feels the need to compete with us."

First. Morgan-soft. Can it be more obvious?

Second, the 2nd and 3rd sentence are practically a Microsoft press releases.
-------------------------------------------------

The Believers are not the Holy Roman Empire. As the saying goes, "in what way is the Holy Roman Empire Holy, Roman, or even an Empire?" The HRE was often fighting with the Catholic church, and more than 1 Emperor was excommunicated. The HRE also had no Roman ties. In fact it was descended from the people who fought the Romans for centuries. And it wasn't an empire, but rather a loose federation of sovereign states.

The Believers more closely approximate Israel, in my opinion. A small group of believers with strong military and a penchant for stealing secrets.

The Spartans may carry the name of the ancient Greek city, but their philosophy seems to be more like today's "militia movement" than anything else. They are survivalists, the people who build cabins out in the woods because of the Y2K scare. But unlike normal people who stock food and generators, they also stock rifles and grenades.

Sorry, I got my facts wrong. I was thinking of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, what with their power over all of Europe and all. OF course, the Believer's could represent most any fundamentalist nation.

Another Microsoft/Morganite saying: "Where do you want your Node today? (from end of Network Backbone movie)
