Could somebody tell me good ways to use monoliths?

Position early bases near monoliths in order to quickly upgrade your troops, particularly if your goal is quick victory via combat.
I find them useful when playing as the Spartans, since (it seems to me) they are best at quick strikes right off the bat. Place your second and third colony near one and set them both to produce troops. Send these first through the monolith and then on to your opponent. Set the original colony to producing formers and send them over to the second and third to help increase troop production.
Monoliths become slightly less useful as the game goes on, so utilize them early.
