Is the AI limited just to the standard units we see in the Alpha.txt and in the guide?
I've never seen an AI sea crawler or flying pop pod, but I did think I had a game where the AI did a drop pod inside my teritory followed in the same turn by about six drop behemoths. Was one of my early games, and haven't seen it since, so maybe memory was faulty.
But recently I have't seen a heli-pod or needlejet-pod, nor trance/empath skimmers built by the AI, which leads me to think that they are limited by the pre-programmed units.

I don't see that many units in alpha.txt. I believe the ai doesn't use the design workshop but does use the automatic design that I have turned off. I seen them use drop amphibious chaos marines or whatever which is one of the units created when I used to use the automatic designs. Although I rarely see the ai actually use a drop unit correctly. In civ2 the ai used paratroopers a lot (usually because I accidently leave a conquered city undefended). I never seen any unusual units created by the ai.

They can use drop well. I've had the Hive waste my last unit w/ a missile and then drop in a unit to take the base.
I see some Empath units. I also see some other fancy units, but usually I get more creative than the AI.

In my current game Dierdre is churning out trained chaos sqauds.
Think trained is a workshop add-on, isn't it?

The AI will use the workshop to design units which fits its situation. The best example is the AAA feature. The AI, as a default, won't deploy large numbers of AAA units unless you start using airpower extensively. But if you start hitting the AI with waves of needlejets or copters, you'll find that new units will appear with AAA. Similarly, if you start using mindworms and locusts, empath/trance units will start appearing in greater numbers.
