Has anyone had these events happen on levels below Transcend? I usually play thinker and have never had either event. Most of my games are about done by the time I start putting up orbital stuff, so that is why that one may never happen.

I have also never seen a valcano form.

I have never had the asteroid events. I did have a volcano erupt once. I think it was one of the first games I ever played and was on one of the middle difficulty levels.
I have another question about random events. Is there any way to minimise the risk of the energy crash that makes you lose half of your energy stores? This happens to me ALL THE TIME! I can't see how anyone wins an economic victory unless they turn the random events off.

I've lost orbital facilities on both of the two lowest levels.

I have, however, never seen a volcano form.

I have seen both in the middle levels. Furthermore has anyone ever notices to timing of the energy market crash; usually I find it just before I have enough for econ victory or enough to buy Ascent to Transcendence.

Wow I usually have one of them happen at least once a game. usually solar flares 2 or 3 times a game will destroy my power transmitters and defense pods. I try to continuously build them so if a flare hits I can rush a defense pod in case anyone tries to PB me.

Right afer I posted my message above I logged off and started up my current saved game of SMAC. The very first turn I started playing again a volcano erupted next to one of my cities. Quite the coincidence eh?

If you get a Stock Market crash, reload from the previous turn and just spend most of your money. You won't feel as bad losing less money (or no monry if you spend low enough).

I've never has an Asteroid hit me, but in two games the Hive was hit. I've had one Volcano eruption.

In cases of the Orbital stuff, it seems to be game-based. I've played some games where there wasn't a single Orbital waster. I've played some games were I lost Orbitals on 3-4 seperate occaisions.

Isn't there a way to disable certain random events by tinkering with the Alpha.txt?

You can disable all random events, but not specific ones.

Obviously I have another version of SMAC (Dutch) as in almost every game a volcano erupts and certainly in all my games (or do I play to long, just for the fun of controlling everbody)asteroids destroys all mines and pods. I do not build mines anymore as it takes too long to have sufficient and see them destroyed in 1 turn (plus the eco-damage it gives and high intensly hate enemy mindworms, although Deirdre is excellent, somebody got her phonenumber?. Pods I only build if an enemy does. The threath of missiles and busters I minimize by pre-attacks with enough enemies to minimize defend at enemey base so they have to build deefenders instead of miisiles plus my own defenders with highest shield. A couple of Planet Buster in the bankpack is until now (alreafy played a couple of Trensendend levels)enough to have no enemy attacks with PB's. If threath is too high I try to set up my enemies with PB's against each other and my probe teams, under the flag of the opposite, will do the rest

One game I was messing around trying to supercharge my economy by building many energy satellites. It seemed like each time I got to about a dozen I'd get flares that destroyed them all.

I've never built up to the 99 satellites, but I've had over 150 satellites up with no mishaps.

I know this is a little off topic, but I have never seen the AI use orbital facilities. What's with that?

I've seen the AI build orbital facilities before. Mostly Orbital Defense Pods, but an occasional hydroponics lab here and there.

I've seen only Yang use orbital facilities and only when he has huge empire. I guess there's some limit, like number of bases, that must be exceeded for the AI to build them. In my last game Yang built lots of ODPs, and then had them wiped out by solar flares, built again, flares wiped them out again, and then the rebuilding started again.

The orbital facilities built were a couple sky hydroponics labs, few orbital power transmitters and a load (10+) of ODPs. Oh and I think there were few mining stations, too. So the AI will definitively build all kinds of orbital facilities, once it gets started. My guess is that there's a limit that's set too high for this to happen, unless AI gets to have a really big faction.
