If a square is Arid you should definetly change it to something else. Early in the game forrests are very good since you can make them pretty fast and they expand by them self + they provide with a decent mineral bonus in the beginning.
I personally allways change all squares that are plain since they can't produce any minerals. Building boreholes are often not very usefull until early midgame since you want your bases to grow fast in the beginning and boreholes takes very long time to make and do not produce any nutrient.

You should carefully research what it is that you need the most in every base and what their purpose are going to be. If you'd like a base to produce a horde of units or build plenty of SP I suggest that you try to build atleast one borehole in that base. etc etc....

Early in the game:
In Arid Squares I Plant forests (shift-F) or
Drill to aquifer (Q) this makes the square
wet and productive.

In wet squares (Green or Blue) build farms
(F). To improve the productivity of farms
you want to build condensers (N)in the squares next to the farms or build a condenser and surround it with farms.
in mid-game: To improve your farms more build soil enrichers (F) in each farm
square.

Wherever you see mineral deposits and
rocky terrain build mines.

Roads everywhere you need to go fast...
also don't forget to destroy roads to slow
your enemies down...

Build Sensors (O)within 2 squares of a
base to help protect your bases, and build sensors anywhere you want to spot incoming enemy units.

Thermal Boreholes (B)are vast mines that
produce minerals and energy. Because they affect the enivronment so much. Put them on
the coastal squares so when the sea level
rises they are flooded.

In squares with energy sources, build solar
collectors (S). Build circles like this:

SSS
S S
SSS

Later in the game put an echelon mirror (E)
in the middle of the square of solar collectors to improve your energy production.

The rest you have to discover on your own.

Happy Hunting!

Below 1000ft plant Forest. Unless Rocky w/ Mineral deposit, then Mine.

Above 1000ft farm/solar all Green/Rolling squares. Forest the Flat and/or Arid squares.

I have found, through my previous thread(terraforming???) and accually tring the advice, that you must drill to aquifier as much as possible. raise the terain in the right places and you have a very effective energy and nutrient suppliment to your (hopefully rainy by now and if not build a condencer in the middle or the area) tile. Oh, and farm/solar these areas as well and as well try to get a rolling tile buy eather finding one or leveling rockey. Finally plant a forest in a flat or arid is the above enhancment have not changed the land.
Hope this is not to confusing and that it helps.

That was plant a forest where the above enhancments have not already changed the land. Yah, I think thanks right

I don't drill to acquifier very often but the importance of rivers shouldn't be ignored. The extra 1 energy can really boost energy production. Just like rivers in civ2 were important for trade. I need to try to make my science city on a river.
