Curious - what country is the .sg in your email. The "little round thing" I think you're refering to is supposed to be a green apple, as a symbol for food - resources are represented by blue gems, and energy by little "suns".
Squares with the resource symbols on them produce 2 extra, and the different types of terrain, plus certain technologies determine how much food, resources and energy you get from the land. Rivers are very important, since the always give you extra energy, and terraforming the land gives you extra food, resources or energy, depending on what you construct. Later on when you get more advanced technologies, you can build orbital improvements that increase food, resources and energy for every base in your faction.
The best way is just to experiment - move workers around in your bases to get an idea of the different production levels from the land, build different improvements and try different terraforming approaches, and see what changes. Hope this helps and have fun!
