In most of my games, I either don't have much of an airforce or my opponents are within range, so I've never had to build a carrier.

My question is: I've heard people say ( I think) that you can use a regular transport to carry missiles. Is this true? And if it is true, does it work with needlejets as well?

Thank you.

I haven't tried with missiles, but it doesn't work with needlejets - carriers are real useful, but I make mine cloaked - the AI likes to send a lot of units in your direction if you invade, and do other stuff as well, and if you play on a huge map, there's a lot of enemy not in range - sneaking around to the back door, then starting the war when you are ready to kick both doors in at once will dissect the largest and most powerful enemies.

Since the carrier special ability doesn't make the ship a dedicated carrier, it can still haul gound units, making it more like a Marine Amphibious Assault Group than a true carrier. Later in the game, I just upgrade my transport cruisers, making half cloaked carriers, and half cloaked repair for fixing damaged ground units while underway.
