Author Topic:   Give units to my Pact brothers

I've just finished my third game. And I loved it! When I found this forum i've read so many pages that it's dizzeling But now i have a question. In one of the games I played, I had a pact with Morgan. And sometimes he changed one of his own units to one I have control over it.

Most of the time they had Wapens and Armour I did't have at all. It was really like a big brother who support my struggle to survive.

The qustion is: can I do the same to other faction when I have a pact with theme. And how can I do that?

An other question is: how can I prevent an allied faction to build cities in my territory! I won't break the pact with them, but it's so ...

Greetings (sorry for my English)

Sir Henry, There's a few things you can do, that more or less handle your problems.

I wouldn't give away weapons to a pact brother, although if you capture an enemy city, and move units to it, then give that city to them, the units will go with that city. Otherwise, you can put units in their cities, and help them out in the wars your are both in, but keep control of those units for yourself.

You can't prevent them from building in your territory, but you can use a probe team to subvert them (if you have the money, you can pay double and not incur a diplomatic penalty and break the pact). The other solution is to build your own cities there firs, so that there are no desirable places for them to build.

Hope this helps,

MtG, Thank you, for your reply. What I wonder was, how can you give units to pact brothers while these units are in the field, because that was what really happend. Is it possible that only the AI is capable to do this?

What must I do, to do the same? I can't read anything about it in the manual. And also; how can I "give a city to them" as you mentioned

Thanks again

Henry - You can't give them units per se, but the AI can give them to you. (if you've played CivII you may remember the diplomacy option where you could send them a unit from one of your cities - that type of feature doesn't exist in SMAC), but you can put some units into a base that you intend to give away.

Nice guy that I am, I never give away one of MY bases, or one that might be useful to me. For example in one game the situation had deteriorated to Planet War 1 where I played as the Peacekeepers (PK) and had the Hive and Gaians as submissive Pact Brothers. The other four factions were in a pact against us, and the Believers and Spartans were both fairly far away, and had huge armies. I didn't have enough power to fight everybody all over the map, so the Gaians bore the brunt of the fighting with the UoP, and the lovely Dierdre started out with only 3 bases, since she got stuck on a small island. The UoP was far more powerful, so I sent military assistance to the Gaians, mostly exotic cruisers and aircraft, and a couple of elite, highly armed rovers and some defensive garrison infantry.

Any UoP bases I took would be too primitive and too remote from my core territory to do me much good in an economic/strategic sense, but if I helped Deirdre conquer them, and then gave them to her, it would level out the balance of power so she could carry on the fight against UoP, and I could bring back most of my ships and planes to where they were needed. So that was what I did - give her the university's old bases, after hooking up their network nodes to some alien artifacts I brought along for the purpose.

The way you give away a base is through the diplomacy dialog - you "have a proposal to make", then "Will you accept a small token..." and the option at the bottom is "I will turn over control of one of my bases to you" then you get a list box of all the bases you currently own.

It is possible to hand over units to another faction without giving the units along with a base. Move the unit to the faction's territory and then (I think) select Action from the pop-up menu (right-click on unit) and there you'll find something like "Turn over control" (you'll find the option somewhere in the pop-up menu if not in that particular place, it is there but it's been a long while since I've given away troops). You need not be in pact with the faction you give the unit to, btw.

iak is right. Also, you can donate worms to Planet: for example, Demon Boils outside a rival's base. Since Planet controls them when the damage is done, you are considered innocent.

you guys are right - I never checked that out, since I'm not in the habit of giving stuff away unless it suits my own purposes.

Thanks

Allright!!
I like'd this forum because of all the stuff you wrote about, but now its even better with such a quick respons.

Michael, what you wrote about the Gaians is what I had in mind. In my last game I had control over the Spatans and the Morgans, (by a "swear a pact to serve me"), and used them as buffer on the coastlines (50-70% ocean cover). I used also their votes at Planetary Counsils, therefore I was planning to help them a little bit when the other factions attacking them to strong.

Thanks to all,
and in Dutch: 'groetjes'
