Is this a coincidence or some sort of "strategy" ?. Every game I've played ended up with the Spartans (and the Gaians, but to a lesser extent) getting kicked of their land bases, rendering them useless since all they do for the rest of the game is build tons of sea bases which they rarely develop, also, why do they have to build hem next to my land bases ??????

Is anyone else experiencing this ??

The AI has a tendency to encroach on coastal areas to try to contain/surround your faction and deny access to ocean resources. It sometimes sucks, but your faction's borders do not extend into the ocean -at all- from a land base, only sea bases can hold ocean territory.

In most of my games, its the Believers that turn into a sea base nation. That's generally because she sends out sea pods early and looses her homeland when someone invades and kicks butt.

The Hive seems to like to favor using sea colonies to TRY and claim the special Landmarks (Monsoon Jungle, Pholus Ridge, etc). But in truth, the AI just favors that as a way to try and use the specials. It also like to crowd your DEVELOPED coastal waters so that it has most of its ocean terraforming already done.

Just more reasons to go to war, as built and designed.

Computer players have a tendency to build sea bases even when these bases are obviously far inferior to land bases. It seems to be a bug in the AI routines.

They like to build around special resources, esp when these resources are near you.

Not just the Spartans, but all of them do that.

They also try to claim special landmarks using sea bases, but this generally back fires, since you can build land bases at the same areas, and land bases have priority over sea bases.

sandworm - it's not true that land bases exert no influence over sea areas. Granted, they do not extend borders into the sea -- which is totally stupid IMO -- but anything within a base's 2 square radius belongs to that base, and that including ocean squares. Computer players simply cannot build inside those squares. Of course, they can try to "squeeze" your border, but that happens on land and between sea bases.

Also note that, since the SPartans start out with mobility, they can get doctrine:flex as their next tech, which means they can expand out to sea much sooner.

Enemy factions will build sea bases (and land bases!) near your bases both to steal your preciously terraformed land and to serve as staging grounds for assaults. This is a decent technique to use, especially if you're trying to ferry needlejets/planet busters about.
