Hello all !

Just started to replay Civilization 1... Someone here still plays that game? Right now I'm the Germans, under Democracy with something like 10 cities, and finish researching every other turn.
My questiooon is- how do I get such a good science output on SMAC? I even decreased the science on Civ so I'll have luxuries (but I've no "Day of the Governer" thingy) and I still research quickly, while on SMAC my averge is 4-5 turns.

1. Build a huge empire with large, developed cities and high efficiency (duh, you knew all that).

2. Haul lots of energy with lots of supply crawlers, build solar collectors and tidal harnesses too, of course.

3. Try to get Merchant Exchange, Supercollider, etc. all in one city, preferably your capital, to avoid efficiency penalties. Haul as much energy as you can there with crawlers and build all of the energy/labs facilities you can in that one city. There's a thread about super science cities here somewhere with more detail. This works surprisingly well for generating extra tech (I'm down from 6 turns to 4 for advances with a few more supply crawlers en route to their boreholes for energy collection)

4. Use all of the above.

sandworm, who liked Civ2, but never got around to buying Civ1.

Yup, basically all of the above. I usually go the tree farm/hybrid forest root with 1 borehole per city and then boreholes on any of the squares on my continent that aren't being used by a city. I ferry all their energy back to one base which is where I build all the SPs that give you tech/labs bonuses. My last game, I had science turned down all the way to 10% and was getting tech every 1 turn. (as the Gaians by the way) I also went Democratic/Green/Knowledge/Cybernetic for S.E. choices. I think i was up to +4 labs there.
